Got hundreds in my garage and a few are getting into the house. Do they come from outside or is there a nest of the feckers somewhere?!

Millipede. Often end up inside during their autumn hunt for a spot to over winter. They mainly eat dead plant matter.

As I learnt at the natural history museum recently:
    Millipedes eat plants
    Centipedes eat meat

Northwind’s beasty looks like a Devil’s Coach-horse beetle, or Cocktail Beetle:

@Countzero, pretty sure that’s what it is- I’d never seen one before, was a bit fooled by its head and thought it was a radioactive mutant black garden ant.

Funnily enough, I saw two within a few yards of each other this afternoon, first I’ve seen in years!
Not a very good photo, the light was going, and it was difficult to see the camera screen properly without lying in the dirt!

They stink. Always thought they stang too but it’s just a display. Just read about them and another name is ‘devil’s steed’. Good bike name for folk that don’t have a name for their ste.. bike yet.

Gather them all up, you might have enough for a bottle of leffe.
