It would help if people said whether they like Christmas in general – the bitter taste of humbug can spoil a nice mince pie.

    I quite like them.

I don’t like the violent and repugnant wind about 3 hours later…

It depends on the crust to filling ratio for me.

Used to not like them. Now I do.

As for Crimbo pud, always thought I wasn’t keen until I tried it sliced and fried in butter with a dollop of whipped cream.

    Take ’em or leave ’em.

    Usually leave them.

For me, being of a Teutonic bent, christmas cakes is all about the Stollen.

…mini ones if used as a mince pie substitute:

    Aldi were shocking this year.
They even had a domed crust, promising all manner of overstuffed delight.
A terrible disappointment to discover what lurked beneath was mostly fresh air.

I’m going to a Christmas meal in a friends house tonight in Austria.
She texted me last night saying ” I know you’re from the uk so to make you feel at home I’ve made mince pies. I had to order the filling from uk. They taste great.”
Do I just be polite and try and eat them or just tell her I can’t stand them?
    Awful food of the devil.

Agreed. The only thing Christmas cake is good for, is weighing down dead bodies.

    Yumm. This year, Hests’.

Mince pie enjoyability varies according to quality/quantity of ingredients (one that the supermarkets really don’t do well ime).

However, any christmas/fruit cake can be rescued with cheese.

    I quite like stollen.
Although you can save money by taking a bite of a fat ball from the birdfeeder followed by a handful of nuts.

    Not always true.
They always vary from year to year and the ‘luxury’ ones are often the most disappointing.

Mrs’s S’s are always the best, of course, but I picked up an emergency half dozen from SPAR earlier in the week which were delicious.

Heston’s this year are nice enough but not like a mince pie at all really, they’re more like a spiced florentine with a pastry topping.

Mince pies are a crime against pastry

And there is no greater crime than that

More mince pies means less sausage rolls.

    Do you want that?

    DO YOU?!!!

I didn’t eat mince pies until I was about 20. My mum used to make them and I thought that the flecks of suet in the raw mincemeat were rice. I hated rice, even the thought of it made me nauseous. Hence there was no way I was going near those nasty rice laden pies. If only I’d known it was only tiny pieces of hard animal fat.

I’m making up for those lost years though.

They are the best thing about Christmas. Cold only, no accompaniment.

Every other Christmas dessert, though, is grim as a grim thing. Stollen, christmas pud (white sauce excepted), all of that is horrid.

Heston’s things, whilst rather ****, are pretty darn tasty. Not mince pies though.

I love them. And Christmas pudding, as long as it’s not too nutty. And Christmas cake. Any type of cake or pie with dried fruit in, really.

The Countryfile ones looked interesting, they had actual mince in them as well as all the fruit stuff, the way they were originally. Hmmm. Might have a go at making my own at some point…

Mary Berry mince pies are gorgeous
The recipe was on last week’s show, it’s still on iPlayer

Serve warm with a dollop of crème fraîche and a little whisky or brandy to wash it down

I detest mince pies, I suspect no-one actually likes them but feels the need to pretend to, just because it’s a Christmas thing.

If they were that good surely they’d be in the shops all year round?

They don’t even have proper mince in them so it’s complete misadvertising alongside the truly horrid taste.

Not too keen. Would never think of buying them, but will eat if they are there.

I prefer a nice apple or mixed fruit pie.

Bloody love em although bought ones are often a massive disappointment. Personally I favour those that are heavy on pastry with just enough filling to give the taste. Mum’s are the best but she hasn’t made any this year 😥

They are but as you don’t buy them you’d not notice such things.
