    …or is it just me?

    :-s

The flip – top finger tip I had has now just about re-attached itself!

Straight through my nail, across entire width of finger and down to the bone… Ouchy

Someone posted a picture on here before the hack of a bloke who’d done the same. After seeing it, i’ve always been VERY careful!

Single malt and you’ll be fine.

Got my thumb caught in mine a few years back, I was left with the same flap/digit interface. haven’t done it since….

Yes I have done it a couple of times but only really ended up with a small graze/cut. I have burnt my leg on a very hot rotor a few times. Still got the rotor tatoo to prove it!

Many years ago as a BMX riding child I noticed that my chain looked loose whilst riding the bike. Did a dumb thing and stuck my finger on the chain whilst riding along to check it! My finger got stuck between the chain and the chain wheel and did a full revolution before I could remove it. A quick trip to A and E and 15 stickes later! I still have the scars and the nail hasn’t ever grown back properly.

    Urk! That sounds painful!

I’m glad I’m not the only one at least!

Tbh I was a bit miffed in that the minor injuries unit local to CYB just stuck a bit of tape round it.

I then rode 30km round penmachno the next day (unable to use my front brake).

When I got to the doctors back home they were somewhat surprised that it hadn’t been stitched or steri-stripped together (it is now)..

( and yes I realise it was stupid to ride with it like that but after we’d driven 120 miles for a biking weekend, and I’d spent all of the Saturday sat in CYB cafe waiting for my mates, I was desperate to ride!)

one of my riding mates sons did this back in August, whilst it was on a bike stand…
Poor little bugger (4 r old) nearly lost half a finger but got a trip in a helicopter out of it. Fortunately they re-attached it & it seems to have healed pretty well so far.

The great Sheldon Brown knew all about this:

yep I did it once. had a bit of a noise coming from the front pads so flipped bike upside down to take a look. Spins wheel and inspects disc /pads, notices some stuff wedged in there which is causing the rubbing and then… ah there it is and points to it sticking finger straight through the rotating disc. <first class idiot>

    yeah i’ve done it.

Span wheel round when the bike was upside down. It started to fall over and i caught it with my finger in rotor. very deep cut but finger remained intact!

When i was a kid in school one of the kids got his finger trapped between the chain and the front chain ring, the frame had rear open drop outs so the wheel would only come out backwards so there was no way of getting the chain slack, eventually the Fire brigade managed to cut the chain to realease the kids finger which wa just held on by the part of the bone.

Yup, a year ago whilst helping someone adjust their front brake before a work ‘team building’ ride I’d organised….felt pretty daft. Nearly took the end off but seems to have healed quite well now.

I had to do my rope access recert the next week which was fun with no useable right hand index finger!

Nope. Never done any fettling that required me to put my hands near spinning discs – what were you guys trying to fix?

Hmmm Sheldon did it good n proper then! You would have thought they might have tried to stick it back on!

It’s my right index finger too and although it’s healed well in two weeks I find the numbness a little disconcerting!

_tom_ I’d just got the bike out of the car and flipped it over to put rear wheel in.

I just gave the pedals a little spin to seat the wheel, whilst my hand was near the dropout. Being hungover and tired I didn’t notice my digit in the disk as I looked up to listen to a mate :-S

Did it once spinning the crank arms with my finger, getting faster and faster until my finger went between the big ring and front mech while in big ring position. Flappy finger tip ouchy here too.

I remember that pic, I feel queasy just thinking about it now. IIRC, it was someone at On-One working on a bike got overconfident and stuck his finger into the rotor by accident. Sliced the side off the fingertip from the first joint to halfway across the nail. 😯

A mechanic I used to work with chopped the top of his index finger off when he got it caught between chain and chainring of a fixed gear bike. He was checking the tension of the chain and unthinkingly spun the wheel round, the top joint of his finger landed on the floor. They managed to re-attach it though.

Tim Kershaw – was a good couple of years ago that, I think Drac still has the (quite disturbing) image somewhere.

Had a few close calls, think there is one in the ‘old blokes who should know better’ in MBR this month. (and it won the prize.)

I made a similar flap on my thumb…I recall the feeling of temporary confusion as to why my wheel had stopped spinning – dumb fecker! You will only ever do it once though.

Yep, as I was setting the bike up in Bedgebury car park, sliced the top of my finger ppen and split the fingernail, I then went over the handlebars about an hour later just to liven the day up even more.

was there a case of someone trapping their bollocks in the back wheel whilst hanging off the back .

or is it an urban myth

My Dad has a mess of an index finger: horrid stumpy nail and an odd looking skin graft…

He did it converting his road bike to a fixie during the 60’s a fitting punishment I think; permanent disfigurement for anyone who chooses to join the niche – nob head brigade…

Not a disc rotor, but: I severed the first joint of my index finger almost completely with a penknife when I was thirteen. The blade went right through the joint, cutting through both tendons; the end of my finger was hanging by a sliver of skin. It’s only because there was a visiting plastic surgeon at the hospital who specialised in reconstruction that I got the thing reattached at all – normally they would have just chopped it off and stitched it up. Had a gruesome metal pin sticking out of the end of it for ages whilst it healed, that was ace for freaking people out at school. I had no feeling in the top part of that finger for about five years. It looks wonky and hurts a lot if I whack it by mistake, but it works well enough for writing, typing and even one-finger braking.

Did it once spinning a car wheel and caught a finger on a rotor arm (old Mini). Went to wash the wound and passed out. My mum found me, head hanging out of a window panel in our back door.

I did it. The whole front part of the finger tip was stuck in the rotor. Had to turn the wheel backwards to get it out again. Ended up with 9 stitches and a strange shaped middle finger on my right hand. Luckily it matches the middle finger on my left hand as i dropped a manhole cover on it a few years back.

My daughter did it when she was 2 1/2 y.o. That’s why now I have a bike room.

Not quite … but had a similar experience when viewing a Pug 209 GTI about 15yrs ago. Popped the bonnet, started the engine and began poking around for anything obvious that needed work. Managed to put a digit (on my right hand) into the spinning alternator vanes, the noise of which made me jump more than the pain – “Bbbzzzzggghhhhhh!!!” Owner wasn’t beside me at the time, so he hadn’t seen or heard what happened. Seconds later he asked if I wanted to take it for a spin – to which I said “yes” of course. Spent the next 10 mins wiping blood on his seat and around his column (ooh er). Ended up feigning interest and even pretended to shake hands as I departed. Needless to say I didn’t buy the car.

I nearly did it – in answer to the question about how it happens, it’s usually when you’re adjusting a brake caliper.
You’re holding it in place, and just forget where your fingers are as you SPIN the wheel… slice.
