I’m thinking of building a MAME cabinet. Constructing the cabinet will be the easy bit. Plus I can use the laser cutter at work and the vinyl printer for some nice side graphics, the glass cutter for a nice screen cover. As a product designer the cab will be the fun part. My issue would be the software side, there’s loads of info online but was just wandering if anyone’s tackled a project like this?

All in I only really need the joysticks, buttons and control boards as I have everything else.

The software side is easy. If it’s a windows system them use Mame 32.

The joysticks and buttons are pretty expensive mind.

Always thought I wanted an upright cabinet, but there was a 3-sided cocktail cabinet one in a holiday cottage we stayed in which changed my mind. Good compromise that lets you play portrait or landscape stuff as intended, and have somewhere to put your beer! Bit more house-friendly too, less imposing.

The picade came in kit form. All you’re missing is the raspberry Pi.

Does the picade come with games pre-loaded?

No, and it’s a right faff on if you don’t know what you’re doing. Like me.

It was a kick starter project. The guys from Pimironi are responsible for it. Not overly impressed with their aftersales mind.

The IT guy at work will do the software and load games onto it for me for a few beers and if I do him a logo for something. I have been asking about and starting to sway towards a cocktail cabinet, although a stand up with a bottle opener on the side and a fridge in the bottom has appeal.

MAME. It’ll play like the originals, because they are.

In all my discussions with this my fiancée has overheard some of my retro games are worth a fair bit. Oh dear. They can’t be sold…
