Anybody want an annoying cough for free ???

I usually get one every Winter , an unfortunate effect from bad whooping cough when I was little . This bastard time it just won’t let go , it’ll be 2 weeks on Monday, usually over them by now , maybe it’s an age thing. No other symptoms, have been out for short walks and a couple very short rides but today it’s a lot colder so I’m thinking leave the bike as tempting as it is breathing in that freezing air probably isn’t a good idea .
Thing is I haven’t mixed with people since before NY so where I picked it up from who knows? According to the NHS they can last up to 3 weeks! Hope not , never had one go on that long ever .
Feel ok in myself just the cough especially as soon as my head touches the pillow! Covonia Night Time jollop worked last year reckon it’s lost it’s oomph this year , though if I take another dose around 4 am I spend the morning spaced out !
oldfartFull MemberBreathing fine , never touched drugs , never smoked not even a puff .
letmetalktomarkFull MemberI’ve had one now for coming up to three weeks.
I feel a bit groggy through the day but come mid to late evening the coughing starts and every night this week I’ve come downstairs to sleep on the sofa as not to really disturb Mrs LMTTM.
I’m really tired of it now both physically and mentally.
I’ve not run or been out on the bike since very early December 🙁
Mister-PFree MemberI’m in Coughing Club too. Just a niggly tickly cough, no other symptoms yet. I’m currently supping a hot ginger, honey and lemon drink to try to fend off any potential illness.
ffatiFree MemberSame thing here got a flu type thing just after Christmas was sweating and shivering then next day fine felt good, later that sday started filling up with gunk and have been coughing. Butas others have said its ok during the day but at about 7ish i start coughing and dont stop until morning, nothing seems to be touching it.
singlespeedstuFull MemberI’ll swap your cough for my cough and sore throat that I’ve had for the last four weeks.
fossyFull MemberThere is a bit of it about – if over 4 weeks get to docs. I was in A&E all day yesterday, and there were a few folk coming in for chest x-rays. I’d come off on black ice on a corner despite ice tyres – first time they had let go in the 15 years I’ve had them (since the bad winter 2010). Fortunately didn’t fracture hip or pelvis, but, my word the pain. Couldn’t ride or walk, hence the check. I’m flying tomorrow (hopefully). Got some crutches, so got to practice moving without getting shooting pains.
You can keep the coughs !
CaherFull MemberI had the flu jab 2 days ago and have had a cough since – maybe there is something new in this variant.
MoreCashThanDashFull MemberSiL went to get her cough and chest issues checked out on Monday, after suffering for 3 weeks.
Pneumonia apparently.
Cougar2Free Memberan unfortunate effect from bad whooping cough when I was little
Is that actually a thing?
No cold here but I’ve had a sinus infection for the entirety of 2024 along with a bout of conjunctivitis and a chest infection. Oh, and at the start of all this I went deaf. I finally got to see someone actually in person in ENT in November. I’ve had more drops and sprays than I can remember and short of being prescribed a suppository I’m rapidly running out of holes to stick things into. Bored now.
oldfartFull Member- @Cougar2 just my personal theory , no evidence to back it up other than it happens every year and most of the time there are no other symptoms?
- Just been for a walk , it’s lovely in the sun and so tempting to get the bike out .
b33k34Full Memberthe pair of us have seemingly gone from one cold type thing to another since mid October. K’s had enough of a cough for the last 3+ weeks that she’s been to the Doc who referred for an x-ray. neither of us usually get sick.
Whatever started for me in mid December was worst through New Year and the first week of Jan. I’ve felt better since the start of the week but my cough comes on again if I exercise hard or go out in the cold.
bundles of fun.
brokenbanjoFull MemberI’ve had the cough for just over a week now. One particular coughing session tore my throat, so I vomited blood. Last two nights I’ve had an asthma attack in the middle of the night. Tis what it is, but it can leave now if it so wishes.
3kormoranFree MemberI’ve given up on strepsils and am now sipping neat ribena. Seems to work pretty well
What is pissing me off is feeling fine, then suddenly having a giant jellyfish try and crawl out my throat. When I finally get it out I’m sure it was attached to my hoop, sinuses and lungs all at once.
ircFree MemberI shared a car with a colleague who had a cough. He asured me it was not infectious as he had had it for 3 weeks. Infectious or not I caught the cough and associated lurgy from somewhere within a few days of that shift.
Fairly mild symptoms though. Mrs IRC had more flu like symptoms. Which is a bit ironic as she had the flu jab thisyear while I didn’t.
I suspect that short of full on self isolation if there is a virus going about you will catch it sooner or later anyway. So If I caught it from my carshare colleague it didn’t matter I would have got it somewhere else. The last week has included train journeys, pub visits and family visits.. Plenty places to catch anything going.
CountZeroFull MemberNo thanks, perfectly capable of acquiring one of my own, but thanks for offering.
oldfartFull MemberI dared to go medicine free before bed last night , when I tried that 2 days ago it ended in tears . I began a coughing fit within 30 minutes, nearly gave in and took the medicine, calmed down , hung on , made it through to 6 am albeit with the customary wee breaks but I’ll take that ! Feels like progress, time will tell.
KevaFree MemberI suspect that short of full on self isolation if there is a virus going about you will catch it sooner or later anyway.
There seems to be loads of viruses going around at the moment, but for me, despite having been socialising in loads of different pubs throughout pretty much most of December I’m still yet to catch one. My GF has been really bad with one since just after Boxing day and is now on antibiotics for sinusitis.

I know that feeling all too well, you have my sympathies.
I dared to go medicine free before bed last night… nearly gave in and took the medicine…
Why would you do that to yourself?
mrmonkfingerFree MemberIt’s a nice gesture, but, I’ve already had several colleagues offer one around by virtue of showing up to the office and coughing away merrily for the past week.
Plus the kids had norovirus immediately before Christmas.
No more lurgys, thanks.

That’s one for Disproportionately Cross. “I’ve not had a day off sick in ten years!” No, but every bugger else has thanks to you. Sitting there crying into a Lemsip utterly incapable of actually doing anything other than taking out half of the office.
oldfartFull Member@Cougar2 so far it seems to have paid off , starting to feel a bit more ” normal “
flannolFree MemberA bunch of people in my running club (myself included) were down with severe (literally bed bound) flu last week. Pharmacist said she’s has quite a few people come through with flu and flu related complications. Definitely some nasty strains circling atm
robertajobbFull MemberThanks for the offer OP, but I already had mine before Christmas, to the tune of coughing like I was on 40 Woodbines an hour (never had a single drag of anything in real life) for at least 3 weeks.
It’s now moved on to the “someone’s taken a rasp to my windpipe” stage. That’s something for you to look forward to.
aphex_2kFree MemberMy colleague / boss has HMPV and assures me not infectious…. While coughing in a small office just big enough for the two of us. Telling me how she’s been coughing all night, no sleep but she’s “on the mend”.
Yeah. Sounds like it.
Worst I’ve had is a week or so of heavy chesty stuff when I wake in the morning but it’s usually fine once I’ve had a shower and a brew.
wipperman95Free MemberNo thanks, I’ve had one since mid November when I had a heavy cold – it’s not constant but usually morning, and then a few times during the day. Feel okay, but it is annoying, and having mild asthma, I’ve put the cycling on hold for now, as cold air can sometimes kick it off, but no shortage of breath, but walking is fine.
Seen the respiratory clinic, who said the lungs sound fine – just need a chest X-Ray, and a sputum test…….
elray89Free MemberI started feeling a bit rough on the 19th December, and only in the last week has my cough tailed off. And I am 35 and otherwise fit & healthy so not necessarily an age thing!
In between I was properly ill, peaking around the night of the 23rd when I had to change the sheets on my bed twice from night sweats, amid a really intense set of fever dreams. The cough was appalling at the height of it too, I had DOMS in my abs just from constant coughing.
It really makes me realise why it’s not quite right to casually refer to the cold as the “flu”. I can see why it is such a health crisis for vulnerable people too!
TheLittlestHoboFree MemberUsed to get winter coughs as regular as clockwork. Would last me all through the winter period and quite often ended with chest xrays, being sick on a regular basis and always having a cold and phlegmy throat.
About 2.5yrs ago i decided to get fitter. I started taking vitamin tablets and exercising more. The major change was my diet, i cut out as much bread as possible, eat a lot less dairy and eat a lot more veg & fruit. The change has been remarkable to my health, breathing and general ability to fight off coughs & colds. I honestly cant remember the last cold i had that lasted more than a couple of days and i haven’t had a cough in years (touch wood). I also used to struggle with stomach acid daily. I would go through packets of rennies. Whilst not related (I think) by improving my diet it improved all the stomach acid issues and i do think there are links with irritated throats which can make them more susceptible to coughs.
I fully appreciate everyone is different and general fitness etc isnt the be all regarding illness but it has been such a dramatic change for me.
BikingcatastropheFree MemberI would say you’re nearly there now then. I had mine at the end of November / beginning of December. Lasted 3 weeks. No cold symptoms or anything like that – just a cough. Quiet frustrating as well. Get on a Teams call, start to speak and start coughing like ******. Glad it’s gone! Definitely lasted way longer than I was expecting and am used to.
