Got a ss compatible hardtail to build up, after selling singlespeed road bike. Proceeds of the strict one-in one-out policy at The Doubleus. Love the look of a singlespeed but thinking Alfine is way more practical for winter bike. A few questions:

Thinking Alfine 11. Is it that much of a step up in width of gears over the 8? I’ve heard build quality / servicing interval improved and generally don’t fettle until it stops working.

Just how heavy is that hub going to feel? Anyone struggled to come to terms with it?

Ratios? What’s going to be best for proper muddy mountain biking as opposed to commuting. Any suggestions / pointers?

    Cheers

Mine is great if a little heavy on the back, it’s on a 29er and with a 20 tooth on the back. In it’s smallest gearing it’s about the same as a 26er in middle on the front and the biggest on the back, so if you’re on a 26er and you live near hills go for the 20 tooth option.

It’s great if you hate cleaning your bikes, just brush off the dried on durt from the chain lube and go.
