There was a lovely comment on a thread earlier RE steep switchbacks, which I was mulling over while ragging it around the woods this evening. The phrase was ‘heavy heels, light hands’.

Anyone else got any nice little phrases worth riding by?

‘Look where you want to go’. About the best bit of advice I ever had, not just on a bike either.

yep, look at the gaps not the trees.
I find myself saying ‘keep pedalling’ lots to the kids. I guess that the same for everyone though.

On any obstacle/section of trail that I think I could do myself a serious injury, instead of using a brave adage like Colin McRae’s “when in doubt, go flat out”, I much prefer to use the less brave approach of “when in doubt, miss it out”. It may involve getting off and pushing, but its a lot less painful 🤣

It’s both a euphemism and an “addage for good technique”

Out the saddle, heels down! I normally shout this at the kids when descending.

Think light, be light. When riding over wet roots.

Let the bike roll and it’ll do the work. When you approach a trail obstacle and start to hesitate and pull the brakes.

Inside pedal up! Again shouted at the kids as they approach a berm.

Momentum is your friend. Much more sense than the usual speed is your friend IMO.

Just relax! Best used before a jump.

Spin to win! And cadence is king!

Up! Up! Up! Shouted at the kids to get out of the saddle when they’re approaching a small climb on the trail so they maintain their momentum.
