How much WOULD I spend on a bike (or do you mean how much can you afford to spend on a bike?) I would spend up to £3500 reasonable happily and did build one from SH and new parts in 2004 that cost me £2800. Sold during 24 months of unemployment. My SS cost me about £1300 to build from all new parts.

How much can I afford to spend on a bike – to be honest I really can’t afford one at present and probably won’t be able to for another 12 months. At that time I’d like to think about £1500.

Jacket – I have a number of £150 jkts if I was looking to buy now it would need to be no more than £100.

Lights – again I have Lumicycle Halogens that cost me over £200 7 years ago. Now I’d be looking at £100 but would possibly go to £200 (which could well be split between a helmet and bar set up).

How much Would I spend or how much can I afford? I would spend ridiculous sums if I could afford it. Part of the fun of reading about bike porn or watching Clarkson ragging a Lamborghini around an airfield is the “what if?”

I wouldn’t spend any money on an MTB cos I’ve got enough of them already. If someone dropped an unexpected £3000 in my hand I’d quite happily spend it all on a bike.
