French Connection 2 – Gene Hackman going cold turkey, + old woman robbing his watch…. eeuurrgh. Rivals Rents in Trainspotting any day, & 20 odd years earlier.

Or indeed, the dentist scene in marathon man.

Old Boy – it can't get much more disturbing than being locked up in a hotal for 15 years without knowing why – purely so you can be released & shag your now eighteen year old daughter & all because you spread a few rumours about a guy and his sister at school.

    Shit.

I was going to watch old boy for the first time tonight.

Thanks Dickyboy, I won't bother now.

most disturbing for me is the end of "don't look now"

or the bit when the kid gets stuck under the ice playing hockey in "Omen 2"

The bit at the end of Invasion of the Body Snatchers where the chick is relieved to see Donald Sutherland then he turns, points and screams. Very bleak. Or for real bleakness, the final beach scene in Get Carter.

how about a little bit of kerb biting and head stamping in American History X. It still makes me whince thinking about it.

Gene Hackman's beating in Eureka. Failing that does 'Two girls and a cup' qualify?

NOT family viewing, but didn't feel psychologically disturbed by it – maybe the sheer relentless violence washed it away..
Sadako 'walking' towards, then climbing out of, the TV in 'Ringu' on the other hand… 😯

you've clearly not seen my suggestion

also Raw Deal: A Question of Consent is pretty disturbing but it's a documentary

The Sadako bit on 'Ring' made my back crawl! There's a bit in Swinley Park that looks just like the well that she came from – I'm in 42 x 11 there!!

Quite enjoyed 'FC2' as Charnier gets plugged on his yacht!! Yay.

Poe's 'Pit & The Pendulum' last 5 seconds is a pants shi77er – 'Nobody will ever enter this room again' …. aaaeeee!!!

The violence in Man Bites Dog is offset by the comedic timing of Benoît Poelvoorde and the OTT performance he gives as the cultured killer.

For true uncomfortableness I'd put Irreversible up top, the way it's filmed the soundtrack and the content are all designed to make you feel horrible!

Also 'Come and See' ('Idi i smotri') is not a nice film to sit through (but it is great!) again the soundtrack is relentless (lots of white noise) and the content is all the more horrible because of the reality it's based on.

Audition was rather darker than i'd expected.

i love the fact that all the women i know that have seen Audition have a completely different opinion of it than the men

I was going to nominate Irreversible too. One of the most disturbing films I have seen. I had to stop watching it the first time and try again when I was in a less 'delicate' frame of mind. Glad I did though.

Man Bites Dog is def up there too, as well as Audition.

In fact, pretty much anything released by Tartan you can guarantee is going to be tough to watch…

I'd agree with Lifer, I always think of Man Bites Dog as a black comedy, allbeit a very dark one. Irreversible on the other hand is truly harsh.

The incredible melting man – that bit when his eyeball just fell out, rather disturbing to an 8 year old, as I was at the time.

Possibly Pan's Labyrinth. The calculated sadism of the military, and the totally alien creatures made this one of the most disturbing films I've seen.

Audition, Pan's Labyrinth were both disturbing.

I've just bought and watched (again) 'The Machinist' with Christian Bale. Now that's a real disturbing one as well ….. never seen a Bale film that wasn't good yet, though. 8)
