A friend needs a new chainset for his bike and the cheapest around seem to be some of the older stock of Shimano 10 speed.

Will this work OK with his existing 9 speed triple set up? Assuming a 9 speed chain will OK on a 10 speed chainring I’m guessing it should be OK.

Other than the gear ratio’s changing slightly, the only other issue I can think of is maybe a difference in spacing of the rings meaning front shifting maybe a bit off?

    Anyone done this without issue?

Run for years on a 10speed chainset on the road bike with 9 speed chain/cassette without a hitch. I’d say there wouldn’t be an issue.

‘Technically’ you front shifting might be a touch out but you’d have to be a real anorak to probably notice anything.
