I think the ‘we couldn’t get him on an organised trip’ is a bit weak

    Weak what ?

This is what Mr Jordan himself has said :

“In the months before this year’s anniversary, I had been trying to get on an official trip to Normandy and my care home staff were helping me, but I didn’t have the necessary security passes.

I thought that was that. Everyone had done their best for me. The staff at the care home had tried very hard to get me on an official trip”.

Why couldn’t he get the necessary security passes ? What’s that got to do with a residential care home?

I would have booked holiday off at short notice, driven him there and paid for a top hotel for him to stay in and all the food and drink he wanted.
It still wouldn’t be enough to say thank you enough, but I’d consider it my duty to get him there and treat him like a king for the duration.

I think there would be a queue of people willing to do the same.
