  • 3 weeks off work ill – ideas please to keep me sane

Just been signed off work for 3 weeks due to Post Viral Fatigue (3 months since I last rode a bike 🙁 )

Means I’ve got to sit around alot and do nothing.

Anyone got any recommendations for what I could do to stop me going insane?

By the way, a family of two kids is one of the restricting factors.

Do you have a games machine? A Wii or similar? Buy the game you’ve always wanted to buy and play it.

buy the parts, and build yourself a pair of wheels for summer.
can take up a surprising amount of time, and you have the satisfaction of riding something youve built yourself.

    Bushwacked, what started this?

I was ill in December. Everytime my chest cleared with antibiotics it cameback a few days later and then I had a period of feeling slammed. Still do abit now. Just ‘weary’ like I haven’t slept for 48 hours..

Cheers – got a wii and been loving Goldeneye for the last few days. Might invest in a new game. Also thought about a big 10000 piece jigsaw of some pretty lass to keep me occupied (and my internet usage down). I do like the idea of building a wheel though.

Hora, not sure what started it. Had swine flu in Oct 09 and after that noticed that I kept getting repeated illnesses after nearly every ride – just coughs or sore throats – and seemingly lost my fitness as I felt like i hadn’t recovered 48hours after the ride. Then in Sept I had a virus and spent the weekend ignoring it at Glentress – then 2 weeks ill after that and have never felt right since. Almost got better about a month later and decided to do a 6 hour ride on the Qs and haven’t ridden my bike since. Wish I’d listened to my body 🙁

    – Get a PS3 – GT5, Modern Warfare 2, some other games. Then sell it after your better. If you buy a SH one you’ll not loose much.

    – Built a bike out of cheap parts

    – Airfix model/remote control car

    – DIY?

Books. Pick a few off this list and work your way through them.

TV – watch The Wire, The Sopranoes, Boardwalk Empire or whatever takes your fancy. NOT Jeremy Kyle. That may end in suicide.

Learn to paint / write / play the guitar / something else.

Console ideas as above are good, though not moving from in front of the TV for 8 hours possibly not too helpful.

Take your bike to bits, clean everything, put it back together again. Bleed your brakes.

Build a model railway. Or get an RC car, strip it, tune it, play with it.

Get some voluntary work to do from home – our local hospice needs folk to hand-write thank you letters to donators. Or make supper every night for the missus

our local hospice needs folk to hand-write thank you letters to donators.

That strikes as being a little bit odd. Surely the team at the hospice should be writing the thank you letters, not getting some unconnected third-party to do it for them. I mean, where is the meaning and the sincerity of a thank you if you just get someone else to do it for you?

You may as well just write one and photocopy it.

I kind of see what you mean, I once volunteered to write thank you letters to the people who had volunteered to write thank you letters to donators. When I received a thank you letter for doing this, I became suspicious and followed it up. Turns out most of these are like pyramid selling schemes. The few people at the top of the scheme were getting loads of thanks but the great majority were just getting a few words of thanks every now and then. Just make sure you know what you are getting into.

That rather rubbish mate. Just a couple days riding with me at GT then a big one on my home turf and you’re wasted. I’m taking that personally. 😉

Use your time in a way to benefit you further than to just take up the next three weeks.

As good as a puzzle, airfix and console games are they only serve as gap fillers, which the porn won’t even do.

Learning how to built a wheel or service a fork would be a more useful thing to learn or practice.

Are you allowed walks? You could do as i do, but in a small scale.

Pop out for a quiet wander through the countryside and soak up the air. Have a look about and open your eyes to what’s happening all around. Take photo’s write about it and share with the family how amazing and diverse life is.

Of course that’s my passion and i can’t expect everyone to find it interesting.

You could always get a train set or paint meaningless little diecast model of soldiers or warriors and paint them.

Get a little lathe and turn some wood, create something YOU made.

why not build a hydraulic ram pump
utterly pointless but in my case I always wanted to do it
I was fascinated by the fact that with a head/drop of 3ft of water I could pump to above the eaves of a 2 storey house,

Video editing, Depends what you go for but I might be able to help you out with that.. I know Avid (PC) and Final cut (apple)

Its a bit turd you’re not well, Hopefully it won’t hang around to long..
As for things to do I reckon making something is the way forward. I don’t think I could do the computer games thing if I was in your position. I reckon it’d be wheel building/fork servicing/airfix kit making!

Or learn a language, English would be good 😉 or pick up a guitar, loads of tutorials on youtube

Depends what software you want to use and what format of video you want.
