I'm after a bike for knocking out some miles on, and am considering getting a rigid 29er as a do-it-all bike.

Possibly whack slicks on in winter and use it as a flat-barred road bike, fat tyres for occasional off-roading (will use normal hardtail mostly for this), and narrow slightly nobbly/semi slick tyres for knocking out the miles on towpaths/old railway lines etc.

To me a 29er seems the ideal machine, but am I missing something obvious!!
