It’s probably 10 years since I last bought winter mountain bike tyres so I’ve very out of the loop on this stuff. So what’s the current recommendation on good (but not too heavy) winter/bad weather tyres that are available in 26″?

One of my bikes has a 2.2″ Specialized Purgatory Control up front and a 2.0″ Specialized Storm Control on the back so I’d be looking for something like the modern equivalent of that I think (although wider, up to 2.3″ or so, would also be fine).

If you can still find the Beaver 2.25 it was fantastic as an “xc but not race mud tyre”. Equally the old Conti Baron was the first really good trailbike mud tyre. Then along came Shorties and Magic Marys which are a bit more full on but don’t have the sacrifices of older mud tyres (ie, being crap at everything but mud)
