    Orbea MX24 -certainly the best looking frame and the components are generally well considered

    Also highly recommend the Orbea MX24 rangerange – my eldest has a MX24 Dirt, has a rigid fork but is a very capable bike

    Another vote for the Orbea. My 7 year old loves his, 10 speed , clutch mech, tubeless ready rims, I added Rocket Rons and a 30mm stem. Lots at that price have screw on freewheels and 6 gears.

    Another +1 for Orbea. My daughter loves hers. Frame is neat, kit well thought out and it all looks ‘proper’.

    There are some terrible bikes out there for the same money.

    How old / big is the kid? We have a cannondale Street 24 and he’s only just getting to be the right size at 8.5. Some of the isla/frogs will be OK from 7 years old.

    Depends on the child and the use.  The Orbea 24 weighs in at 11kg whilst the Hoy Bonaly is 9kg.  I’ve got Hoy Bonalys for both of my kids and they love them, especially for getting up the hills.

    Our daughter has the Orbea, our son had a Dawes Academy 24, he’s now moved up to the 26. They are both very capable bikes, but while the Orbea probably looks better, the Dawes is a much lighter bike.

    Disclaimer, we have a 26″ Orbea tucked away as an upgrade for the currently very happy Orbea rider. But we’re also looking to buy a Dawes Academy 26 MTB as an upgrade to the very happy currently rigid Dawes rider.

    If you can wait a week or so the new Vitus Nucleus 24 would be worth a look – air fork, hydro discs, and even decent tyres. The list price is £399, but Wiggle do ‘Loyalty Discounts’ so if you’ve bought enough stuff from Wiggle to be a Platinum customer it will be £350 ish.

    I can see it’s on CRC https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/vitus-nucleus-24-kids-mountain-bike-2019/rp-prod173140 and it does look nice.Any idea how much it weighs?

    I got the frame and fork for this:

    Charge cooker 24 for £50 earlier in the year off fleabay, the build is spares bin/cheap parts based 1×8 old deore brakes, wheels built by me with Condor 24″ rims, I shortened a pair of old Shimano Sq taper cranks…

    So the Whole bike has cost no more than £150 (so far), but did require some effort/bodging and a few bit to be sourced by me…

    Any idea how much it weighs?

    IMHO a key question for childrens bikes.

    Lots of the manufacturers bang on about ‘lightweight frame’, but very few are prepared to state the actual weight of the bike.

    Hoy is light.

    Seriously consider 26 tho for more available and cheaper tyres and the fact that kids grow quick. If you must have suspension make 100% sure it has an air fork for the right levels of adjustability.

    That Vitus looks fab.

    Who specced that thing? Could you not find a shorter mech?  That thing’s getting mullered straight off
