It’s that time of year when you start to review stuff…what’s been your favourite album of 2022?

I just don’t really buy albums any more but this one, Cool it down, is predictably fantastic from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I don’t know what is the album for 2022 because I am playing catch up with music/songs from way back to at least 20 years ago. LOL!

    Currently listening to the followings:

    Ann Clue
    Luttrell
    Ilan Bluestone
    Deniz Bul
    Adonis FR
    Kazuma Aksaki
Above & Beyond (some of the songs featuring Zoe Johnston are spooky)
    Sunny Lax
    Andrew Bayer
    Pryda
    Maksim Dark
    Boris Brejcha
    Hozho
    etc

I think I’ve only listened to one ‘album’ this year, the rest is singles and whatever plays on 6music or playlists on Spotify.
Which means my only album of 2022 is Yard Act.
They’d also have to be my gig of the year as well…being the only one!

Mostly listen to older stuff but Paulo Nutini’s Last night in the bittersweet and Arctic Monkeys The Car have been getting lots of time on my Spotify recently.

Maybe cos it’s so recent in the memory and they were absolutely frickin awesome live –
    GILLA BAND – Most Normal

    Some runners up
Working Men’s Club – Fear Fear
The Smile – A Light for Attracting Attention
    Haai – Baby We’re Ascending
    Belief – Belief
    billy woods – Church
    Jockstrap – I Love You Jennifer B
I could keep going, but they’re the ones I listened to most.

Its still J Dilla’s The Shining for me. It’s been my favourite album of the year since I first heard it around 2010, and that hasn’t changed yet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ujXj-uCeiE

    Alvvays ‘Blue Rev’

Elements of Teenage Fanclub, My Bloody Valentine, The Smiths and R.E.M. but so much more. Molly Rankin is a sublime song writer and lyricist.

@chewkw, finally! Normally my reaction in music discussions on STW is ‘who?’, but finally I can relate.

2022 highlght for me a toss up between Tinlicker ‘In Another Lifetime’ and Grum ‘Unreality’. Most of my listening is sets rather than albums though – more Anjunadeep than Anjunabeats but I still enjoy the old Above & Beyond albums (and am impatiently waiting for the Acoustic 3 tour):

    Luttrell
    Lane 8
    Marsh
    Camelphat
    Mat Zo
    Spencer Brown
    Richie Blacker
    Jody Wisternoff
    Franky Wah
    Cubicolor
    Ben Bohmer

What’s the Franky Wah 2022 album called? I’ll check that out.

Just looked at what I’ve listened to most that came out this year, and very little of it is album based. And I’ve always been a fan of albums. Hmm…

    * Lightning In A Twilight Hour – Overwintering [ ambient but almost pop songs ]

    * Gabe Gurnsey – Overwintering [ electro but almost pop songs ]

    * Warpaint – Radiate Like This [ lush wrapped in a velvet blanket 4 piece, er, rock ]

    * SAULT – AIIR [ R&B Londoners give us their take on last century New World (American) classical music – bloody audacious ]

    * JARV IS… This Is Going To Hurt [ Cocker and his jamming crew give us a soundtrack of Krautrock noodling mixed with intimacy and angry resignation ]

This sounds like something I should listen to, thank you.

It’s Bobby Wratten from the Field Mice. In recent years he’s alternated between songs and ambient… but on this album he’s “floated” the two together. It can pass you by when listening… nothing jumps out at you… and I mean that in a good way. Music to hibernate to.

Thank fudge, there’s still folk who listen to new music!

    Gabe Gurnsey – Overwintering

I’ve got “DIABLO” that he released this year… what was “Overwintering”?

I’ve never heard of half of the ones up there !

    Lots of Dad rock/folk/6Music here

It’d be great if people could post links too

    Wet Leg – Wet Leg
    Sports Team – Gulp
    Yard Act – The Overload

Lots of old men listening to generic dance tunes so far..

What about old men listening to raging punk rock? – Best release of 2022 is this…

    Don’t really have a ‘best’ but came here to post this;

hard to see past the new Daniel Avery album

Also I have mostly been albuming from what came in 2022:

Alabaster Dp – Gold (poncy jazz, nice)

Conflux Coldwell – phantomatic coast (boring ambient)

King gizz – the lava/mushrooms one (overly long and indulgent spacey funk jams)

Bug club – particles (boring guitar focussed 3 piece)

The Daniel Avery album is decent but I need to listen to it a few more times to see if it grows or fades. New Skalpel album is the same, is it a long-term listen?

Ah yes, I shoulda looked at the line above… Thought I’d missed something!

Sunrise on Slaughter Beach – Clutch.

Fear of the dawn – Jack White.

Rose Pink Cadillac – Dope Lemon.

Can I take my hounds to Heaven? – Tyler Childers.

It’s not been a great year for music I like. Clutch are always reliable and Neil Fallon is a fantastic story teller with a voice like a possessed preacher. Best rock band ever.

Album released this year that I’ve actually listened to most is probably Mahal, Toro y Moi, which this is on:

Great seeing them live in Manc the other week, tho I’d have to preferred a slightly more acoustic set.
