We got a bell full face passed on as a mates son had outgrown it. First time my 4 year old wore it was on his scooter to school. He hit a tiny pebble and went chin guard first into tarmac. A full face helmet has helped prevent more serious injury with my son on two occasions so far - neither were occasions where a full face was 'truly justified'. Once on the family green trail at Sutton Bank where his foot slipped off the pedal, had a wobble, and went off the side of the trail face first into a tree. The second was on a pump track where he had a head on collision with an older kid going the wrong way - the full face stopped the other bikes handlebars making contact with his face. Both would have been far worse had he been wearing his half lid. He chooses to wear his half lid most the time but tends to prefer wearing the full face in the winter as it's warmer.
