It's Nice To Be A Noob

I am away. I am not entirely sure where I am. I might be on a train on the way home, I might be pedalling. I might be crying gently with exhaustion into a mug of tea. Anyway, I am not at my desk, because I’m off doing something new on a bike.
I’ve spent a lifetime riding bikes. I’ve ridden on ancient child seats that definitely predated any safety regulations. I’ve ridden on the back of tandems, and the front. I’ve raced indoors and outdoors, down hills and around tracks. I’ve had one brake, two brakes, coaster brakes. I’ve pedalled around the countryside on skinny tyres and fat tyres, with e-assist and without. I’ve ridden wheels of many sizes, on just about every surface I can think of.
And yet, there are still new things to do. This week’s new thing is to pack up all my gear onto my bike and ride and sleep solo for a couple of days. Bikepacking, I hear it’s called. Some of you have probably done it already. But as it happens, I have not. Not at least in the sense of riding all day while carrying all the stuff and then sleeping (hopefully) and riding all day again. I’ve nipped out at the end of the day for a night under the stars. I’ve ridden all day to a conveniently transported camp set up. But I have not done the solo self sufficient wandering.
It might be fun, it may not be while it’s actually happening. But trying something new is always fun, and I’m glad that there will always be new things to do with bikes, and new places to go. Have a great long weekend, see you on the other side.

Hello? Is there anybody there? We're certainly not here. We're over there. Somewhere. Eating things most probably.
