Lewis Buchanan’s Only Fans Sponsorship Deal – what do you think?

by 0

As Lew Buchanan adds Only Fans to his sponsor list, the jokes are easy to make. Probably known best for its home grown porn scene, Only Fans seems keen to shift its image (or maybe just expand its market) to be seen as another option for those looking to provide exclusive Members Only content to those willing to pay. This isn’t the first athlete to be sponsored by them, but to our knowledge it’s the first mountain bike athlete.

I am so stoked and proud to share my news that I have signed with OnlyFans for 2023. They are a HUGE part of my program and enabling me to level up in many different areas and it feels awesome to bring a company that is out of the industry and so large into our sport of Mountain Biking. We shot this short video to give you some context on the deal and showcase some sick riding in a cool location in the UK. Make sure you give this video a like to show support, comment below and subscribe to OnlyFans for BTS content, my new “how to” videos and bike set up tips along with connecting with me directly.

Lewis Buchanan

Paywalls are nothing new, and we’ll be hearing soon from our publisher, Mark, on what he thinks of this move and its potential significance for the content consumption vs content production world. But there does seem to be the unavoidable question of whether Only Fans is just another social media channel, or if this is the porn industry looking for a spot of sportswashing.

For now, what do you think? Vote in our poll, and head to the comments.

it seems most of us are on the same page about there being enough free grot on the internet already.

I’m not sure, which page is saved in your Favourites tab?

There’s a bit of me that’s with convert, I’m a 75 year old, now pretty much ex classic (Steel is real, still on 26″ wheels hardtail) MTB rider. OnlyFans and Lewis weren’t on my radar either…
So, I’d never heard of Lewis or Only Fans either, I think the only competing riders I can mention are Peaty…and Peaty, and sponsors are Red Bull.
However as is often the case the issue here is the tip of an iceberg. I’m a father of daughters who gave up work in the 1970’s to look after my children whilst my wife went out to work. She had a better earning potential than me, and as I type this from our eldest daughter’s NSW holiday home after a day watching surfers, and playing in the sea I was thinking how lucky I have been.. but in the same internet session I’ve come across some stuff about some guy called Andrew Tate..
The old maxim “the price of freedom is eternal vigilance” has never been truer, we all (particularly fathers of daughters) need to take a stand against pornography..anything that makes it (the objectification of women) more ‘acceptable’ needs to be challenged, vigorously, and linking it to downhill racing or any kind of MTB riding is a no no in my book.
I suppose my rant will smack of “Oh another ‘boomer’ running of at the mouth, now that he’s too old….” but the porno issue is not that dissimilar to the alcohol sponsorship and linking that Hannah discussed in a previous Singletrack editorial letter we really do have to be careful what we are prepared to let into what is after all less of a spectator sport, and more of a participation exercise..

    That’s intriguing.

If it is the case, I wonder whether Norco are genuinely outraged (maybe they’ve been getting complaints?) or just want to take advantage of a disrepute clause (or whatever) to cancel his contract?

if he’s doing pay-to-view training plans and reviews etc, why not use Patreon? Or is OnlyF paying him to advertise on his clothing? because if he’s getting a fair chunk of money for the apparel adverts then fine, but if not he’s taking an unneccesary risk

(it’s actually quite tricky to not use the word helmet to avoid cheap puns)

If he’s really lost Norco then that risk has become an issue. I believe Onlyfans are paying him, but the being cut off from support at races* is going to have an effect

*did I see somewhere that he isn’t racing, and its just social media stuff now?

I’m guessing googling Only Fans at work would be non-ideal then…..

I managed to be redirected to it yesterday, searching for some obscure book I clicked on a result in Google which was a spoof page (lots of random tags and then auto redirects) to Only Fans with a young lady removing her pants right in front of me…

Luckily no one monitors what we use our work laptops for….

how long did you stay on the page to make sure it wasn’t what you were looking for?

Given I’m only ‘pretty sure’ our laptops aren’t monitored, rather than 100%, not very long at all….

Plus had the wife walked in, I’d never be able to explain that as a spoof redirection!

    Well, quite frankly I’m shocked!
Not by the UCI sending a letter to inform Lewis that he and his sponsor aren’t welcome at their events, but because he doesn’t seem to grasp that he’s the implement in a sportswashing exercise.
TLDW: apparently there’s far worse porn on Twitter than Onlyfans, which isn’t a pron website, do your own research, etc.

There’s a certain irony that he’s had to post a YouTube video to let people know

    What a shame.

Perhaps he could also do a video telling us how it’s ok to uncover trails still being built so he can get social media content, with total disregard to the person building the trail, as it’s “his job” and he needs the content for it.

Good grief, he really does drone on, doesn’t he? I also think several people predicted potential problems coming up for him due to this sponsorship…unsure why this is a surprise really.

I don’t know much about onlyfans but benefit of the doubt they didn’t set it up for pron… it just happened and probably at a time they couldn’t be too picky or perhaps in a Elon Musk type freespeech thing?

    Twitter, FB, Insta ??

FB is full of scams and apparently pron and grooming etc.
The scams they seem to do nothing… and noone seems to be able to.
I keep getting fake “ALDI giveaways” (usually local buy and sell groups etc.) and reported a few to FB and no action is ever taken… even though its an obvious SCAM and it’s down the the group admins … presumably Aldi know and would love to shut this down… ???

whilst i think the ‘only fans’ thing is a bit of a poor choice, i am actually more interested in Lewis’ videos now most sponsors wont touch him with a barge pole.

He is buying bikes and frames with his own money and in return can give honest opinions etc. Having broken both a NP giga and a Evil thus far, its interesting to see and hear about. Albeit it appears his actual knowledge of bikes, manufacturing, defects and damage seems pretty limited, but hopefully that will develop with time and he can give more concise feedback.

Is “Subscribe to my OnlyFans” too long for a trail name?

Fair play for being the devil’s advocate. Maybe they didn’t set it up with the intention of streaming porn, but take a look at the career path of the majority shareholder and the primary activity of Onlyfans since his financial involvement began. Coincidence?

    Compared to what though..?

i guess compared to something perceived to be more ‘wholesome’ by the general public. Despite Only fans etc being a great source of revenue for so many and that ‘pron’ is far more accepted these days, its still deemed to be undesirable by many.

So i would assume the UCI worry it might taint their great reputation if its associated with them. I can only imagine they would do the same if the Santa Cruz Syndicate became the Santa Cruz 3rd Reich Race Team?! 😛

Having looked it up I don’t think it’s co-incidence but I don’t necessarily think its a chosen path?
As it happens I stumbled into Lewis’s YT late and though my first thought was “Hmm isn’t that a pron site” listening to him about getting Sport and other things than pron into it at least makes me think they want to do other stuff?

I guess in part its where they are trying to take it … I don’t get an idea Bell and Camelback are meant to take over sales of arms rather than supplement and diversify whereas I think onlyfans might actually be trying to make non pron content its mainstay? (I say might … not is)

is this whataboutery or have I missed something?

Well you may have missed it .. but then that’s kinda what I was saying.

Vista acquired Camelbak in 2015 and Giro, Bell and Blackburn in 2016. The publicly-traded company (VSTO) owns 50 outdoor brands including Savage Arms and the Federal Premium Ammunition and is a large contributor to the NRA. Vista has been slow to respond to calls for action and a coherent strategy in curbing gun violence.

I don’t remember the UCI issuing “we don’t let riders sponsored by arms dealers ride” even though several stores and chains did. (They may have but I don’t remember the UCI expressing any opinions on this)

Yeah, obviously they’re trying to steer the company’s profile to one a bit less sordid. I can see why the UCI wouldn’t accept them as a sponsor for the foreseeable future, they’ve got a long way to go before they’ve cleaned up their act. The fact that they still have the over 18 paywall suggests that they aren’t yet willing to give up their primary revenue sources.

Seems far bigger organisations than the UCI don’t have an issue with OnlyFans, and in Dubai too.

TBH, so what if he’s sponsored by a porn site?

Why is that a bad thing?

Particularly one that on the face of it is going to have a whole lot less exploitation with the creators working for themselves rather than the “mainstream” porn business model.

Yes @mert. The precedent had already been set, so Lewis would be very naive, uninformed or “uneducated” to think that the rule would be applied differently for a website that wasn’t quite 100% porn content.

People: mtb racing needs to attract sponsors from beyond the sport – not just bike brands – if it is to get the money in to expand the sport and pay athletes wages more akin to mainstream sports.

Mercerdes: parks a load of SUVs in the background of races.

People: not like that – what outdoorsy mtb person can afford a new £100,000 merc?

HSBC: title sponsor, put some red and white adverts up

People: not like that – banks are evil, boo corporations, mtbers are alternative dirtbags.

Red bull: televises top level events free to user for a decade

People: not like that – sugary death drink, gut rot, giving kids ADHD, #drink water

BP: spends money on cycling development

People: not like that – oil is evil, how is this sustainable transport

Only fans: pay athletes to decorate their helmet advertising their money making website

People: not like that – unprofessional, exploititive, not child friendly

I dont know what exactly people want? Until there is a Second-hand-Citroen-Berlingo-world-series where all teams must use 11 speed deore gears they won’t be happy.

It does seem a bit silly to ban him for that but at the same time, he is just so dull. For someone who is very good at riding bikes he just seems like a complete charisma vacuum.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.
