This award is about people. Who is getting bums on saddles? Who is creating the opportunity for new people to discover mountain bikes? We want to hear about the project, campaign or other initiative that’s helping build the MTB community.
Trash Free Trails
Trash Free Trails has made big strides for such a new movement, bringing changes to our behaviours out on the trail. Picking up trail litter as you go is becoming the new normal. It’s launched the ‘TFT Approved’ scheme for event organisers, and with Red Bull and the EWS already adopting it for some events we can see it becoming an expected standard for events to meet. And they’ve launched the Trash Mob Academy, which aims to reconnect children to their environment through mountain biking and other outdoor activities. Their summit in summer 2022 brought together trail access advocates and land managers in a way that few have managed. Through focussing on the tangible goal of reducing single use plastic rubbish in our environment, they’re bringing people together and getting them talking about wider issues.
Colour Collective
During lockdown a dispersed collection of mountain bikers found each other through social media and formed the Colour Collective with the aim of celebrating and increasing the participation of people from diverse ethnic backgrounds within mountain biking. As well as sharing stories via social and print media, they’ve created a real life community. Through a range of meet-ups they have offered existing riders new opportunities to try different aspects of riding, as well as introduced new people to mountain biking. Look out for members racing and riding across the country, sporting their ‘Representation Matters’ jerseys. Representation does matter, and the Colour Collective is helping riders see a place for themselves in mountain biking.
Reyt Good Bike Club
The Reyt Good Bike Club is about getting out there and enjoying the outdoors in a supportive group. There’s no need for matching kit, or match-fit fitness. Just show up willing to try, and enjoy the camaraderie of keeping going, improving, and trying something new. Each ride route is provided in advance, with a clear description of what to expect. You won’t get dropped, and everyone on the rides shares their knowledge and skills as they go. There are social rides and organised events, like guided bikepacking and bike maintenance skills. If you’re looking to find riding buddies, you’d be hard pressed to find a more welcoming bunch.
