The Trance has been in the Giant family for a long time now and today sees them unveil their newest updated model – the Trance Advanced Pro 29er. Designed as a do-everything trail bike, the Advanced Pro 29 has seen its real travel grow by 5mm to 120mm.
Available in three different builds, we’ve got the mid-priced Trance Advanced Pro 29 1, which retails for £5,999, in for an upcoming mag test, but you can get a sneak peak at this fast and agile singletrack slayer below.
Frame & Geo:
At the heart of the new Trance Advanced Pro 29 1 is a re-engineered full carbon frame that features an updated Maestro suspension system, for increased climbing ability and pedalling efficiency, without sacrificing any descending capability. The Maestro System utilises four independently placed pivot points and two rockers to create a floating pivot for an active and efficient system.
One of the biggest updates to this new model is the addition of a flip chip for adjusting the geometry. Sitting inside the main rocker, the new addition lets you change between a ‘high’ and ‘low’ position. The high position raises the BB, and steepens both the seat and head angles changing the rider’s weight distribution and position for faster handling and increased climbing performance, while the low position does the opposite for a bike that is more stable at speed and adds confidence when descending.
Headline geo numbers for our size large test bike (in the ‘low’ setting that it arrived in) are 472mm reach with a 626mm top tube, 65.5° head tube and 76.3° seat tube. The chainstays remain unchanged across all sizes at 439mm
The updated frame has custom molded frame protectors on the downtube and the drive side chainstay to add protection and keep noise down to a minimum. The frame also features new integrated ports for all cables / hoses, designed to give a clean look and also help eliminate any rattling and the downtube now features a storage compartment located behind a removal clever under the bottle bosses for stashing all your essentials.
Spec:
Our Trance Advanced Pro 29 1 comes spec’d with Fox’s Live Valve – its electronically activated suspension system – that is designed to offer the best pedalling platform available, combined with ultra fast acting valves for when things get rough. The fork is a 34mm stanchioned Fox 34 Performance Elite Live Valve delivering 130mm of travel, while controlling the 120mmm of rear wheel travel is a Fox Performance Elite Live Valve shock.
Shimano provides the braking with a set of XT 4 piston brakes clamping onto 180mm rotors front and rear to offer plenty of power and modulation when needed. Shimano also takes care of the drivetrain with a 12 speed XT drivetrain mated to a Praxis Girder carbon crankset which shaves a few grams and adds stiffness for when you really want to get the power down.
As the name suggests the Trance Advanced Pro 29 1 rolls on 29” wheels and comes complete with its own brand Giant TRX 2 Carbon 29 WheelSystem. Wrapping those rims is rubber provided by Maxxis with a Minion DHF 3C Exo 29 x 2.5 on the front, and a faster rolling Aggressor 3C EXO 29 x 2.5 on the rear.
The cockpit is again all own brand components with a 780mm Giant Contact SLR TR35 carbon bar held in place with a Giant Contact SL35 stem in 50mm length. Carrying on the own brand theme, the grips and saddle are all from the Giant stable with a set of Giant Tactal Pro Single grips in 130mm length and a Giant Romero SL saddle.
Rounding out the component package is a cable actuated TranzX dropper post delivering 200mm of drop. All this carbon and componentry added up comes to a very respectable-for-a-trail-bike 30.72lbs / 13.71kg.
