Three Things Thursday? 3 Backpacks with spine protection

by 16

This might not be Three Things Thursday – it might be Tech Tuesday, or Whoop There’s New Kit Wednesday. Ideas welcome. But what this is, is a run through the features of some products with something in common.

3 bags osprey camelbak evoc

This week, it’s back packs with built in spine protection. Two of them we’ve already reviewed, and one is hot off the boat and just hitting the shops.

Evoc Trail Pro 16

Camelbak Chase Protector Vest

Osprey Raptor Pro

This is the first time Osprey has made a backpack with spine protector in it, and it’s only just hit the shops. Made from D30, it’s designed to protect your back while also carrying All The Things. Available in one size (18 litres) and one colour (black). Watch this space for the review.

I came to Singletrack having decided there must be more to life than meetings. I like all bikes, but especially unusual ones. More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments. I try to write about all these things in the hope that others might discover the joy of bikes too.

Cheer up you two, these packs may be a ridiculous price but there is plenty to be happy about 😀

Just the thing for an Insulate Britain protest.

I like the format of this article. It showed me some reviews which I’d missed – I usually read *all* backpack reviews. Other topics? Full-face helmets, what-tyres-for-<insert surface here>, dropper posts. It might be tricky to find classes of review which haven’t been used as a group test already.

Good ideas, Thanks. Glad you like the format.

You know what I’d absolutely love, I’d a review of well ventilated full face helmets for people with huge heads.

Alas I know you won’t do one as they just don’t exist 😔

No.. I think you are mistaken. I’ve seen some people with really big heads. Definitely a thing

@thegeneralist: My ageing 661 Evo fits a 62cm head with room to spare, and is better ventilated (until I stop and there’s no airflow!) than the XC helmets I’d been using. So recent 661 helmets might be worth a look.

I agree to a large extent, possibly even extra large, rfreeman, but not fully.

I’ve got an XXL 661 with the mips liner ripped out, and it does indeed fit quite nicely, but is really badly ventilated. Looks like the model is the Reset.

Still loads better than the alternatives where I had to get busy with a hot spoon gouging chunks of polystyrene out 🤣

    Yours sincerely

@thegeneralist: Oh dear. Thanks for the data; I’ll avoid that one.

@thegeneralist we did review these, though not specifically for big heads: https://singletrackworld.com/2020/02/3-full-face-trail-helmets-head-to-head/

As the age old proverb says, there are three types of accountant in the world, those that can count and those that can’t and I second that motion for a fat head helmet test.

@hodge1365 as a former accountant i find that a bit harsh, i would tend to ask my client/customer what number they wanted to see and then calculate that accordingly..

    I like the format!

I still miss through the grinder in the magazine, although I appreciate it’s unlikely to return.

    Tests I’d like to see

Clipless shoes that are passable for cycling to work and wandering about

Bike stands- as in to stop a bike falling over, not working on.

Like the format. I’d welcome more like this.

We were scheduled to record episode 2 tomorrow but unfortunately Hannah’s caught Covid so she’s isolating at home until next week.
