Jon takes to the mountains on the long travel big wheeler that was way ahead of its time - but how does it compare to the current crop?

I miss my Niner.

I was drooling over that very bike just this afternoon whilst having a headset switched.
Lovely folks in DC Cycles
Alas the Niners are a lot too spendy for me
At the beginning of the article you posed the question of how well it stacks up against the johnny come lately long travel 29ers. You did not really answer that question, how about it?
“It’s not the lightest but it’s a tough, predictable and fun trail steamroller that punches well above it’s weight – and it’ll give any of the current breed a run for their money in the handling stakes.”
I’d stand by that – compared to bikes such as the carbon fibre Tallboy LTc it’s certainly a few pounds heavier but I’d say it matches that bike well for sheer riding fun. It’s similarly ‘Ameri-trail-bike’ in the sizing and geometry; possibly a touch behind the very latest long and slack sizing trends that we’re seeing in the latest generation 26″ 160mm bikes. Whether that’s good or bad will really depend on your preferences…
