Got an iPhone or iPad? – Instructions

So you are a Premier Digital subscriber and have an iPhone/iPad/Android Smartphone then?

UPDATE – JUNE 2011 – We have upgraded our online magazine viewing software from issue 66. This issue is viewable on iPads without having to download the PDF file. This feature is still under development so if you have any problems then please get in touch. You can still download the PDF files as normal.

Here’s our guide to getting copies of Singletrack magazine conveniently stuffed into your pocket.

First of all everything starts in our Mag Archive. You can navigate there from the ‘Mag Archive’ button on our main menu above. Inside our Mag Archive you will see the covers of every copy of Singletrack we’ve ever produced. As a Premier Digital subscriber you will also see ‘Read’ and ‘Download’ links if available on that issue.

If you click read that issue will open up in another browser window and you can read it right there in your desktop. Unfortunately since iPhones and iPads can’t view Flash files, you can’t use this link to read copies of Singletrack on your iPhone/iPad.

That’s where the ‘Download’ part comes in. We have to get the PDF document onto your iPhone/iPad via iTunes. To do that you need to install an App on your iPhone or iPad. There are many Apps that will handle PDF files but we are going to run you through a few of our favourites.

Instructions for the App iBooks

The greatest advantage of iBooks is that it is a free app. It’s Apple’s own app for buying and viewing eBooks and it just so happens it has the ability to view any PDF file that you may like, including our own magazine PDF files.

  • First search for and download iBooks onto your device, then sync your device with your iTunes library. This will copy the app to your iTunes library and store it in the Apps folder.
  • Then simply navigate to the Mag Archive using your device .
  • Find the issue you want to read on your device and click ‘Download’ button
  • Once your device has downloaded the PDF file it will offer you the option of opening the file in iBooks. Click ‘yes’ and the iBooks app will launch and you will be able to read your issue.
  • If you open up iBooks and you can’t see your issue on the book shelf click the ‘books’ button at the top of the page. Your issues will be stored in the ‘PDFs’ area.

Further information on iBooks can be found on the Apple support pages.

There are other Apps that you can use to view your PDF copies of Singletrack. Our current recommendations are Bookman and Goodreader.

ePub Files

An ePub file is an Electronic Book standard file that can be viewed on most smart phones. For iPhone users the free app iBooks will open both PDF files and ePub files. Whereas a PDF file will display a copy of the actual printed magazine an ePub file is much closer to an actual book. All the ads are stripped out and most of the images too, leaving you with just the text of the articles.

If you have iBooks on your iPad or iPhone then just click the ‘ePub’ button in the Mag Archive and once downloaded you will be given the option to open the file in iBooks.

Most Android phones have the ability to open ePub files built in so clicking the ‘ePub’ button should open the file on your phone or Android tablet.

Kindle Files

If you have a Kindle then clicking on our ‘Kindle’ button will download a file specifically for your Kindle device to your computer.

Once downloaded you need to copy this file into the ‘documents’ folder on your Kindle device. To do this connect your Kindle to your computer using your Kindle power lead. Your Kindle should then appear in your list of drives in much the same way as a USB pen drive would. Open the Kindle folder and you should see a folder called ‘Documents’. Copy your Kindle file into this folder. Your Singletrack issue will then appear alongside all your existing book files on your Kindle.

Alternatively you can simply email our file directly to your Kindle using the unique Kindle email address that you were provided with when you bought your Kindle from Amazon. If you have forgotten your Kindle email address you can find it in your Amazon account settings.
