I’ve got some 25mm stans tape already for other wheels. Should I be looking at using wider tape, like the superstar 29mm stuff for my soon to arrive 35mm (30mm internal) hookless LB rims?

Good question, I just plumped for some 25mm (Tesa) tape for mine and will probably give it a go tonight. Don’t expect to many problems. Tyre fit is pretty tight so hopefulyl just need the tape to adequately cover the holes.

Of course the law of sod sys I’ve now jsut set myself up for a world of pain!!

Worst comes to the worst I could do a couple of wraps!

I was debating the same thing. Just got 35mm LB rims and put the tape I had on which I think was 21mm – covered the holes easily enough but nowhere near full width. Anyway tyres (Specialised) went on easily, put some Stans fluid in, went up with a track pump straight away and held air overnight. I ran them at 20 & 23ish psi and survived the first ride without any burping or squirming, very impressed!

I just (yesterday) replaced the stans rubber rim strips on my 33mm wide LB rims with Stans 25mm yellow tape. I just used a single layer, no need for double wrapping etc.

They went up fine (with my new compressor).

There’s a few different things going on here… My current LB rim is the old, narrower one and I used a narrower tape, so the tyre is sitting on carbon not tape. Works perfectly, that. You’d kind of assume the wider ones are the same. Buuuut, if the tape’s not under the tyre, then there’s a risk that when you push a tyre off the bead, the tape gets damaged.

Might be that the best options are either wide-enough tape, or much narrower tape, so that it sits in the well of the rim and doesn’t have that effect.

That’s true Northwind, to be honest I was going to get some of the 29mm stuff from Superstar but couldn’t wait!

Having said that when you factor in the tape filling the dip where the holes are even the 29mm might leave this problem on the 30mm(IW) rims?

Get a roll of gorilla tape and tear it to the correct width to cover the rim bed, it tears along it’s length as easy as it tears across

Interesting point. Sods says that possible damage will happen right at the point of changing a tyre before going for a ride, not having any spare tape then ruining a ride. Maybe I’ll buy some appropriately wide tape after all.

So, on that note is the superstar stuff the same as stans?

Has anyone asked them to only drill the outer face? Makes lacing a bit tricker but no need for tape then.

yeah not drilling the inner has been done on the mtbr forum threads on these rims, sounds like a nightmare to me!

I’ve got Fulcrum rims which have an undrilled inner, you fit the spoke nipples with a magnet. It is an incredible pain in the baws, in order to avoid a much easier job with tape.
