Lots of historical things are cool and interesting, e.g. Romans, Crusades, Mayans, etc. even though they were no doubt pretty brutal and unpleasant times.

Also it was actually pretty rare for crews to be harmed, once they’d surrendered. Often they were given the smallest boat in the pirate fleet and sent on their way.

Those days were violent times everywhere, I don’t think pirates were any better or worse than anyone else.

Also pirate ships were run as a democracy, in decidedly un-democratic times!

Wow, that’s old fashioned.. even when I was a little kid 30 years ago in infants’ school we had lessons about cowboys and indians and how the indians weren’t actually baddies. We still played the games, but we had cowboys and indians on both sides. Cops and robbers was more popular though, easier moral territory 🙂
