This maybe old news but just incase anyone is tempted to buy XTR pedals, had one fall apart on me minutes before a race today! Not old or worn at all. Sheared off inside which as I’ve now come to learn is an exciting feature for some owners of these. the word is stick with XT if thinking Shimano.

Very well known issue that, along with others. Stick to XT

Remember xtr has a 3 yr guarantee. Send them back and get a new set. I did.

540’s at £28 are IMO the best Shimano combo of weight vs cost

I’m pretty sure it’s the m980s that have the issues and the m970s were better, but still relatively fragile

M970s (and M959s) are indestructable! Problems began (and one imagines, will end) with the M980s.

Should get some reliable pedals like Crank Brothers. 😉

I’ve had some m970s for years and they seem fine… but just wondering if they’re about to burst into flames…

M970s are bombproof, it’s 980s that had all the issues.

    I have 3 pairs of M980s

They wear fast. All mine have bearing wear. I’m planning on returning them towards the end of the 3years in the hope of M9000XTR replacements

    So glad I read this.

My 980s sheared off after not a lot of use and I left them in the garage and forgot about them as I put on some xt’s I had lying around.

Just dug out packaging and found receipt for April 12. Phew! Just in the 3 years

Hopefully CRC will sort me out

Mine went back to merlin, and were replaced.

Are the XTs immune from this?
