Just had a look at removing my XTR cranks (M970) and it seems i need a special tool but there nearly £30!! Seems steep just to get to my BB to give it clean, anyone got a good way of getting them off without one, help much appreciated.

    Thanks

borrow or buy it is prob your only option. i cant see any other way of doing it without damaging it. 🙁

There is no bodge for this – you need the tool.

I did manage to remove one with very gentle levery persuasion but tbh it’s pretty moronic to treat such an expensive crank like that, it was a night-before-a-big-ride emergency. Don’t do that, get the proper tool.

If they came with your bike, there would have been one somewhere in the box with the instructions/pedals/reflectors etc, or if you bought them new then there would have been one in the box… so maybe ask your lbs where it is..

ive just had the exact same dilemma.
took it to the shop and batted my eyelashes.

2 second job to whip it off, so they didnt charge 🙂

the only other option is a heavy ended multitool.

They are supplied with the full retail package, bit not with OEM kit.

Giant bikes I’ve put together have come with it.. I guess not all though in that case. I’ve got one! 🙂
