I have a XTR 2x chainset with 38T and 26T rings. Shimano state that the BCD for “inner rings” is 64mm. Hypothetically – if I were old and fat – could I fit a 24T ring designed to run on the XTR 3x chainset?* Or am I missing something?

    Look here: http://bike.shimano.com/media/techdocs/content/cycle/EV/bikecomponents/FC/EV-FC-M980-3086A_v1_m56577569830799250.pdf

Depends if you have the extra spacing for the granny ring. SOME crans dont and need a little spacer to sit the chain ring out properly.

Almost certain they’re fine without spacers, that was just the M970s.

Try it. If the rings are too close get some m8 spacers.
