I’m in the market for a new chain (stop laughing)…..

Was thinking of XTR job, any tips on fitting the pins? I’ve just read on the CRC feedback statement that they can be a pain…one poster stated “just use a power link”. Isn’t that how everyone joins their chains these days? May I add that my chain did not snap at the powerlink, which is odd now I come to think about it coz it aint and oldie…100-150miles max??

Can’t you just remove the broken links from your old chain?

I join XTR chains with a SRAM Powerlink. Never had a problem doing that.

Can I ask why you think you need a new chain after 150 miles?

I’d give the old chain another try, or get a warranty.

What chain was it?

Big fan of the SRAM 991 myself.

I use XTR chains and like ’em. Broke two Powerlinks while guiding and only use them now for emergency repairs. I also carry a couple of spare pins with me.

The pins are a pain, but they also have a wedge profile which theoretically makes them stronger. I’ve also done a very basic like-for-like test with a SRAM chain (lying one chain next to another) and the Shimano had less sideways flex.

But if it’s only 150 miles old I’d be talking to warranty. Just to double check – how old is the cassette that it’s meshing with?

I got an XTR chain warrantied. It snapped after 150m though, not 150 miles!

High(ish) end SRAM; come to think this’ll be the 5th chain I’ve snapped…all MTB, never on road bike.

Once bitten, so for that reason..SRAM…I’m out.

XTR + spare pins + power link for back-up it’s gonna be.

Well the key thing is why did it break? If its worn out, its not worth the bother rejoining it. If it was just an unlucky snap, worth your while rejoining it.

12 links should be exactly 12″ long, if it is 12 + 1/16th” long, its worn out, if it is 12 + 1/8th” long between pins, the chain, rings and cassette are all utterly shagged and the whole lot needs replacing. ‘Just’ 150 mile or not.

When hyperglide was introduced, quite a lot of chains snapped. I think some were warrantied.
