My daughter’s been saving christmas, birthday and pocket money for an Xbox one, and we finally hit buy yesterday on an Amazon prime deal for one with Kinect (sp?) and a 3 game bundle.

1/ When it arrives tomorrow, does it have everything in the box to make it work, or will i need cabling for it?

2/ I’m sure someone said once that it can also be used to replace your (ancient) DVD player, and if so is that DVD’s or Blu-Ray too?

3/ Any recommended games for a 12yo girl, who’s into sport, to make use of the new platform (is that the right word – I mean not just the XBox but the kinect bit too). She wants FIFA and NBA already, but is happy with last years rather than the eye watering cost of the current year!! Even better – anyone got any suitable games they’d recommend that their kids don’t play anymore or have outgrown, that we could consider?

    1) Yes, though you really want to get some rechargeable AA batteries for the controller.

    2) Yes.

    3) Dunno much about sport games, but watch out for in-game payments with EA stuff. I’ve heard horror stories of kids running up big bills.

    I have a PS4, but

    3) Dance Party on kinect is hilarious – especially when 40 yo duffers get up to play after a few drinks. Your 12 yo will smash it.

Buy games from CEX or Game pre-owned, you can even find this years games fairly easily.

Not sure about the games but get ready for some downloads. Lots and lots of downloads. The system updates will likely take a while, as well as using a chunk of any broadband limit you might have.

This was something I wasn’t prepared for. Those thoughts of “I’ll have a quick half hour on the Xbox” disappear when the game you want to play needs a 4GB update 🙁

You’ll really need a XBOX live gold subscription to get the most out of it, but you usually get a month free with the console. You get a few free games every month as part of that subconscious and the ability to play on-line.

+1 for the updates….don’t expect to plug it in and play it straight away 🙂

And depending on your broadband provider you might need posted line adapter and ethernet connection.
And best to buy rechargeable battery pack for the controller. And headset…

    It never ends……

    And headset…

Don’t rush out and buy a headset. You do get a cheap one with the console, and it does me fine and I don’t feel like I need to upgrade. It just plugs in to the handset and doesn’t need it’s own batteries. You may decide you want a more expensive one, but it will be fine to get you going.

I just use standard rechargeable AA batteries in the controller.

    Thanks all; now another question.

The setup guide is telling me to connect my Sky box o/p to the input of the XBox and then to the TV.

Why does my satellite telly need to go through the XBox, am I going to have my viewing habits analysed and then have Microsoft bombarding me with targeted adverts.

Can i just keep it separate or is there a real need?

You can keep it separate of course.

I’ve not done it, but the One can act as a header to the Sky box. It’s part of the ‘media centre’ ideology of the One. Also, it saves a HDMI input if that’s an issue.

No reason why you can’t try it and see if you like it, and put it back if you don’t. Or not.

Don’t bother with using your Xbox as a header for your Sky box. It has a noticeable effect on picture quality. While interacting with a Sky box through the console is quite novel it adds nothing to either

    OK, next duffer question.

I created an account for me and set myself up on it including getting a 14 day free trial sub to Gold as recommended by Jon1973

Now I need to add my wife and daughters. From googling I understand that all also need an account, which is OK, they all have emails. Then I can add them as family members and amend the kids parenteral controls, etc.

Does making them all family members then mean they all use the same Gold subscription I have automatically? And I assume somewhere in the setup process i get to say whether they need a password or code before they can make in-game purchases?

Jeez, whatever happened to consoles where you plugged it in to the back of the telly, put in a cartridge and played?

Yes. All of the Gold content will be available to the family

We originally set my daughter (10yrs old) up as a child but it was very restrictive, in the end we created a new adult account for her so she can play Battlefront etc.
