  • Wythop Woods, Lakes (nr Bassenthwaite) – any hints?

Thinking of a big ole ride tomorrow, including Whinlatter and Back O Skiddaw.
Best way to join the two is using Wythop woods.

Anyone ride up there these days?

I see there have been forestry works – how much is open, and how much can we ride?

Was thinking of heading straight up the east edge of the fell in the woods, but there is the option of heading round to the west of the fell top on the road if the forestry works are in progress still.

    Any pointers appreciated.

p.s. this is the route I’m planning… best take a mars bar.

The route you show was clear of forestry work a couple of weeks ago. There is a footpath squeezed between the A66 and the lake. It’s below the level of the roadainly, so fairly pleasant. Access it where the wacky dual cway starts beyond Thornthwaite.

I would think you’d be better driving between Skiddaw and Whinlatter personally. If you skip the rubbish bit between the two you could add an extra awesome descent onto whatever you’re planning.
