They don’t “think” anything about the pay scale, they set it
If its anything like where I was then the payscale discussion goes something like this every so often.
1) our staff are unhappy about the suspected pay disparity
2) we should put everyone into pay bands to sort it out
3) we can’t afford to give the long serving employees a pay rise in line with new starters
4) staff are still unhappy as they now know they’re getting a raw deal
5) staff leave and the company employs new people with less experience at a higher rate
6) projects go spectacularly badly
To be honest today I’m earning more than I did there just sat in a cafe on call waiting for the phone to ring , so its not all bad outside the O&G world, but these days aren’t everyday.
