as title really i have a xtr960 chainset on the 5 spot ive just bought and im having issues with it hitting the frame whilst im stood up pedalling.

now im no lightweight at 18 stone with a pack and i cant help feeling that im a bit too heavy for an xtr chainset which meant to be for race bikes??

what do you think would a xt or even slx be better suited to me??

also can someone explain q factor??? and would this afect the xtr crank?

Saint would be a stiffer option, I think all HT II chainsets have the same Q factor, so the spacing will be the same. You could go for HT I and buy a longer axle BB.

I think there is something wrong with the crank and/or frame rather than flexing.

I would look into that before looking at a crank change TBH

yip seen the piccies and just been in the garage to look at mine both my cranks are equal distance from the chainstay about 10mm each side.

    Is the crank arm bent?

BTW mines a blue 5 spot 09 in small size

    mine is a 09 large .

how would i tell if the crank arm was bent?

could i put the chainset on the other way round and see how close it gets to the other side?

I wouldn’t have thought there’d be a huge amount of load on the cranks when near the chainstay – obviously the real load is on the downstroke. You sure there isn’t another issue with spacing maybe or frame misalignment?

Agree that something is wrong for your crank to be hitting the stay.

Q factor is the distance between the outer faces of the cranks, XTR M985 is lower, all the others are the same.

The frame will be flexing, not the crank, unless there’s a fault with The crank.

Have you left out the drive side spacers on the BB ?
    Broken pivot somewhere…?
