  • Worth bringing a bike to Sheffield?

At the end of October I have to be in Sheffield for a couple of nights for a course.

Will have Monday and Tuesday evening free and was wondering how easy it would be to find some decent riding from just west of the city centre, hotel is just off ecclesial road.

Hard tail, gnarmac or road bikes available.

Just off Ecclesall road is perfect for getting out via Porter Clough. From there you can get out to Houndkirk / new Lady Cannings trail and back via Blacka Moor. If you’ve got a bit more time then you can get out to Stanage too.

Superficial is on the money to fit your request, but if you want more, the peak district is all of 10 minutes drive from you. You’ll be at ladybower in 20.

So, Monday – ride up to Lady Cannings along the porter/mayfield valley

Tuesday – drive to ladybower and do a loop of Crookhill – gores wood – Derwent Edge – Cutthroat Bridge

    🙂

I can send you a couple of gpx/strava routes if you like. If riding directly, head out from Endcliffe Park. Otherwise drive up to Ladybower.

There’s the Eastern Moors loop too. That’s worth a pedal

    0/10 for effort.
Is there any good cycling West of Sheffield?

Really? You have to ask on this forum?

Get a map, get a guidebook, get an ounce of common sense. West of Sheffield. As a mountain biker think about that…

…How long did it take you to come up with the idea that YES YES YES you have to bring a bike with you.

    Fule! Still 0/10 trolling factor.

Oh – Bring lights – it’ll be proper dark up there.

    See lights threads.

    Proper dark….

Is that different to normal dark?

Won’t have a car so will be rising from the hotel but good to k ow there will be accessible riding.

Mowgli, some gpx files would be really helpful thanks.

Northern dark is certainly different to your southern dark. Its just, well, darker frankly.

If you’ve got a cyclocross you could ride to Ladybower and ride round the reservoirs up to Slippery Stones and back down the other side.

    That’s easy – Northern Lights! 🙂
Aurora Borealis do some really pretty ones. Not sure how many lumens tho.

Wrong side of the Pennies for clogs, surely? Traditionally a Lancashire thing.

Right side for bikes though. What hardtail? I’d bring that and head out through the Parks, Porters Clough, Ringonglow and Lady Cannings. Devils Elbow and home (or back up) if you have the time/legs/batteries.

Not at all. There used to be a superb clog shop on Attercliffe Common. They remained popular in the steel works well after their general demise due to the heat insulating qualities of the wooden soles.

Southern dark is basically just dark grey

Ever been to a New Model Army gig Gravity-Slave?

Back in the day the West Yorkshire/Bradford contingent would favour ‘Walkley Clogs’ of Mytholmroyd [No connection to Walkley S6 btw!]

Has anyone suggested Wharncliffe woods yet? Some nice jumpy DH stuff there as well as some more chilled trails.

And yeah, bring your bike, peak district.
