We’ve been looking to replace our fleet of 4 15yr old Claude Buttler’s which haven’t been looked after.

Of course as they are not personal bikes the budget is rather small for a MTB at £400 max.
Sadly the LBS have been rather slow at replying to me even with visits from myself.
The best on offer is a Diamondback Heist 1.0 @£500 with 20% off for bulk order.

With our work we need to get a few quotes before going to the budget holder so popped into Halfrauds for a look and was slightly impressed with what was on offer in that price range.

Me being chubby curious fancied the Carrera Vendetta, but not sure I could swing that sort of bike with work, though I could argue that the fat tires will inspire confidence and will cushion the rear end….. spec isn’t great but for the price….

Or one of their VooDoo Bantu’s Which again is OK for the money, we will get it the previous sale price. Hydraulic brakes are nice just a bit harder for us to maintain.

There is a few others but these are the two that stood out….

Anything else to look at and or advice on what we are looking at? We are down in the bottom end of Cornwall, so Big local dealers are limited.

    Thanks in advance.

LBS to the rescue….. Diamondback Heist 1.0 with 20% off, seems a good deal for the spec compared to the similar price Halfords offering.

I’d be inclined to get a few of those refurbished ex-post office bikes for £250 each

which are designed as ‘fleet bikes’ and used to not getting a lot of TLC

When you say ‘works bikes’ thats a bit broad as to what they’re meant for: what does their intend use entail…errands to get pasties or what?

I just get some of those Pinnacle Ramin 19ers. Hydro brakes, no suspension and 1x gears means they will be touch and simple maintenance wise and they’re a decent weight too.

Sorry should have gave a bit more information, we have a sports budget in work where we can spend X amount a year on sporting goods for the guys & gals here.
We have just had 3 people (me included) trained up to MIAS MBL lever 2, so have the option to take people out on rides and covered by insurance etc, our bikes are just not up to the job.
We are looking for bikes that are capable of light cross country and up to a little bit of trail use at Cardinham and Lanhydrock, probably just the Blue routes as most people capable of the red routes will have their own ride.

As we can get the Diamondback for £400 they are looking like a good option, but i think they are at the top of works budget, so the VooDoo Bantu which we can have the the previous sale price + 10% British Cycling discount is looking like the other option.

Well they went for the Diamondbacks, one of my coworkers managed to get them with an extra 2% off from somewhere else. Bit annoyed they didn’t give me the chance to approach the more local bike shop to see if they can match it… My fault for having leave I suppose!

    Cheers, Steve
