We’ve just had a survey completed on the house that we hope to buy – and the surveyor found evidence of woodworm in the roof timbers.
    So….deal, or no deal?
Vendor is offering to get Rentokil in to sort it – will that be the end of it?
Singletrack massif, give me your advice!

Did the surveyor say it was treatable? I’m selling a house which had some woodworm and we got it all treated before it went on the market. It was in the floorboards and we had to replace 6 of them as they were too far gone. As long as it’s certified, it should be fine.

Don’t worry about it; most older houses will have woodworm somewhere or other. Take up the offer to get it treated and be grateful this isn’t the USA or somewhere hot where all kinds of things can eat your house. Even if the treatment failed, woodworm progresses slowly especially in a cool place like the roof; you will find the roof beams in old barns have been eaten to hell by worm and are still doing the job.

Be much more concerned about dry rot, which is much more serious and difficult to eradicate. This is a worry in older houses with poorly ventilated spaces under the floors or leaking roofs.
