Simple really, what tyres should I get for winter XC riding?

I’ve been thinking of some Nobby Nics, half price from OnOne

You will get them cheaper from Germany. Some love them, some hate them. I use them all year round because trail conditions a pretty much the same all year in Yorkshire

unless its rocky and rooty then narrow ones …. 1.8ish.

if rocky and rooty – carry on as before but with a few more nobbles 😀

Nics are crap winter tyres. Dirty Dan, Mud X, Spesh Storm are all good.

My front & rear 29 NN 2.4’s are doing a grand job in the present wet woods conditions. Seems to shed mud OK, and grip is decent too.

Running mud x rear on the FS which I’m changing out for a Beaver

Thanks for the thoughts. I think I’ll go with the Nics, see how I get on

Im running 2.0 Spesh Storms with Control casings, set up tubeless on ZTR Flows. Been really impressed with them, slow on hard ground and felt a bit sketchy at Lee Quarry the other week on all the rocks there, but great grip on everything else. They also feel pretty light and only cost me £45 for a pair.

So what you really wanted was an XC tyre but not a winter tyre then.

Nics are crap winter tyres. Dirty Dan, Mud X, Spesh Storm are all good.

And several people were having a go at me the other day for suggesting Nic’s aren’t all that grippy especially in softer conditions!

Nice to know someone I actually know is a good rider agrees with me, not just some forum warriors… 😉

Mud X are great, Maxxis Medusa’s are also useful as they come in silly thin sizes for cutting through really bad mud (1.8″ is very narrow, the 1.55″ is like a CX tyre!), Spesh Storms look good too. Keen to try the Maxxis Beavers though as a less extreme mud tyre, that’s a bit faster rolling with slightly higher volume than normal for a winter tyre, especially as I’ve heard so many good things about them.

Old-skool Trailrakers are great if its just mud you’re riding in. Bit sketchy on damp rocks and roots though. But what isn’t?

Just got some Bonty XR-Mud tyres to try on the other bike as a comparison

Small block 8’s, all year round. There’s always something to grip on.
