I have a pair of Altura Altitude trousers which were great for autumn / winter / wet weather riding – sufficiently splash / water resistant to keep you reasonably dry but not as hot as full on waterproof trousers. They have now died and aren’t made anymore. Any recommendations? I have some Endura Humvees for summer riding. Anyone have any opinion on the Polaris AM 1000 Repel trousers? Are there any shops in central Scotland where I could have a look at some?

Keela Scuffer trousers might be what you’re looking for! I’m on my second pair; the knees are cut for activity, they have velcro loops at the ankles – and they are both warm and water resistant for when it is proper cold and wet.

Seeing as you’re in Central Scotland you could venture to Keela’s factory shop in Glenrothes. I think they’ve actually got a cycling-specific range of clothing now.

Army surplus goretex over trousers, 20 quid ebay. Bay 1 waist size up from your jeans size.

I don’t know if you’re aware, but skin is actually fairly weatherproof

Aye, but wet skin loses heat very rapidly and will accelerate hypothermia.
