So I’ve lived here in this house for about 9 months and still occasionally get post for the previous occupant (a woman). Today a letter arrives to “Mr Adam Pilkington”. Weird, I say and and open it.
Its a demand. For a £55 fine for an unpaid for train journey last month (by coincidence, to the nearest station to where I work, but I’ve never caught a train there!).
I phone the number – no human beings available, but it says you have to write to them to dispute or to report an error.
Why should I write to them? it’s nothing to do with me!
So I stick a post-it to the letter “someone’s given you false details”, seal up the envelope with sellotape, write “Not known at this address” on the envelope and stick it in a postbox.
Should I expect bailiffs?

Is your name Adam Pilkington?

Why open mail that isn’t addressed to you? That might be an offence.

I just thought it’d be junk, but was curious about the name.. Normally (if its a previous owner and not the woman) I’d just bin it.

I live at 10, theres a house/business next to us built afterwards with 10a, 10b and 10c.
Flat 10c gets rented out to some people who are out to screw the system.

Get loads of letters from loan companies with the address of 10.
It has our address on. Name varies.

Don’t want to have the bailiffs round so open them up and ring them and speak to someone that they don’t live at this address.

Get a few more letters. Few more phone calls “Stop sending these letters to my address”.

They stop.

If your names not Adam Pilkington, It’s safe to say you’re in trouble.

That might be an offence.

I’m certainly offended.

Return the letter as “not known at this address”.
Then take the train to work without paying.
Give your details as Adam Pilkington when you get caught.
Repeat.
Profit.

If it was me, I’d just write RTS, gone away, and send it back.
If more letters arrive, then send back, with ‘nobody of that name at this address for twelve months’ written on it.
And keep sending them back until someone gets a clue.
It’s not you, and not your problem.
Unless someone turns up at the door demanding money, in which case I’d show ID, proving I’m not who they’re looking for, and say I’d call the Police if anyone else turns up demanding money with menaces.
Of course, there may well be other options.

Do it promptly and consistently.

I’d check your credit rating if lots of unpaid bills start turning up at your registered address

Just pay up Adam, you fair dodging free-loader….
