Just think what it would feel like when you catch the splinter on your crank arm at the bottom of you pedal stroke… 😯

It’s not a dangerous track – all track racing is potentially dangerous.

    HOLY F***ING JAVELIN, BATMAN.

MASSIVE PROPS TO AZIZULHASNI AWANG – FIRSTLY FOR PUTTING HIS 65KG SELF UP AGAINST RHINOS LIKE HOY IN THE KEIRIN.

THEN FOR RIDING ACROSS THE LINE AFTER A CRASH WITH GOD’S TOOTHPICK STUCK THROUGH HIS LEG.

    BEST WISHES FOR THE RECOVERY.

Splinter doesn’t really cover it does it? A splinter is something you dig out with a pin.

When I read the story I wasn’t sure what the fuss was about.

Now I’ve seen the pictures I’d like my lunch back!

Are all tracks surfaced with the boards running round the track? Also, how would they fix the track – can they replace individual boards?

Yes to the first bit – its little strips of wood – I seem to remember guys out at Manchester with a sureform plane and a tub of wood filler doing repairs between races!

Aye, I know that it’s made of individual bits of wood. But do they ever lay the boards radially rather than lengthwise round the track?

Crap! I’m not going to whine about the splinters I get off of pallets and blackthorns.
These are the tweezers for that job:

Havent seen it done. The cost of repair would be crazy and the speed against the grain would feel like an off day with punctures, surely?

Aye, I know that it’s made of individual bits of wood. But do they ever lay the boards radially rather than lengthwise round the track?

When Herne Hill was first built (back in the late 1800’s) they ran the boards radially along the straights (the turns were still cinder) but soon changed them to lengthwise when the whole track was boarded. All modern velodromes are built with the boards lengthwise.

They use a quick drying resin filler to repair any scratches – sand it down, fill the scars, sand it and hoover up the dust and splinters with a little hand-held vacuum cleaner.
