Been pondering the 29er and was wondering if the bigger wheels effectivley up the gear ratios. What are the findings of the 29er massive?

    Yes they do.

They go up by 29/26=1.115 or 111.5%

    Roughly…

Cheers for that but don’t call me roughly

Not quite as simple maths as matthew h states, but roughly the same idea…

A 29er is actually a 28.5″ wheel with 2″ tyres on, so for the same volume tyre from 26″ to 29er wheel, you only gain 2.5″ in diameter of the overall wheel.

the percentage gain is just a smidge under 10%. So if you normally ran an 18T sprocket on the back of a singlespeed for instance, you’d have to increase it by 10% (so put a 20T on basically) to get the same overall ratio for the larger wheels.

    Hence my “roughly”

    😉
