Yes there is a learning curve !

very luckily I only half filled with oil, the first fry was a bit of surprise in the volume increase index.

Lost art. I have a chip pan, it’s ace. 1/3 full of oil is all you need.

My wife is away this weekend. No chip pan.

We went to the awesome chip shop in the village. There was a queue, so we were given an extra portion of chips and half a fish free.

Three of us sat here feeling a little full now…..

Any pan can be a chip pan, just put oil and chips in it.

I did em for the kids, they were polite but asked for oven chips next time.

If only someone would invent a spoon with some slots in and some kind of absorbent disposable paper towel to absorb the exceeds oil…

How does one get anything out of a pan? A serving spoon, perhaps?

Sounds overly complicated and messy to me.

You’ve never owned an actual chip pan then, oribble messy things.

Either buy a deep fat fryer or just use a normal pan, get the oil hot, par boil the chips before hand and let them cool, then when you ready into the hot oil until the desired colour is achieved.

There nice but TBH I much prefer some nice new potaotes simply boiled and served with a little french butter.

When my mum set fire to the chip pan the only think totally destroyed was that years Fire Prevention Calendar. Mind you the polystyrene ceiling tiles (it was the 70’s) were a little worse for wear.

The Audi driving, coffee drinking, lightweights are all over this thread.

You cannot cook “proper” chips in oil.

“Proper” chips can only be cooked in Beef Dripping.

The same goes for battered fish.

Until you understand this do not waste your time giving any advice on deep frying, as it will simply be wrong.

    “Business weekend”

No wonder she’s away on “business” if you’re the type of person to get excited about a chip pan 😛

This is the truth. This is how my grandma cooked me chips when I was 4, before wrapping them in newspaper so I could pretend we’d been to the chip shop. That’s the best chips I’ve ever had. 🙂

We have a gas bbq with a single ring on the side. I’ve been scouring the local charity shops for a decent pan and have all the ingredients lined up. Home made onion bhajis will be experimented with, cooked outside. Yay – unhealthy food without the unhealthy house smell!
