    Hello,

Looking at getting something like a PX London Road or a Kona Jake for commuting plus adventure cross etc, but…

I am a biomechanical oddity who needs his pedals further apart than your average person. Riding a triple overcomes this problem, but triples seem to be falling out of favour with bike manufacturers, and retrofitting one to a new bike is an extreme and expensive solution.

I have several solutions for my road bike (Speedplay Zero with their laterally adjustable cleats used with wedges) but this flexibility does not seem to exist with MTB pedals.

Yes I know that “Knee savers” and other axle extenders exist, but these extend the axle by 20mm minimum, whereas I would only need 10mm each side.

Anyone? Or do I need to build up my own CX bike with a triple?

Heh – this sank quickly 🙂

    I don’t think there’s an ideal solution.

I’m torn between just building a PX London Road with a Tiagra triple (expense, faff, but will be able to use MTB pedals, plus will have enough gears even for hilly, fully-loaded touring)

…or buying off-the-peg with a double, and using my road pedals, which would be fine for commuting and bridleway/towpath duties, which would be 90% of the bike’s use anyway…

I’m running the specialized pedal spacers, with my cleats adjusted in as far as they go. This is on my road bikes with Shimano pedals. This is working really well, and has made a big difference to me
I’d like to find a solution for my mtb and cross bikes, as like you I don’t need the 20mm width on them, only around 10mm

What do you use on your cross bike and MTB now?

Nothing, the q on mtb cranks are wider, so need around 10mm.
I need to measure a few different spd pedals and see if there’s any difference

You could get some long spindles made. Ward make them for most pedals if you email them.

I had a bikefit done in Boulder and was told to try the 20mm kneesaver on on side. In the end I ended up putting 20mm on each side and am really happy with it and no more kneepain.
    Can recommend it.

matts, if I can find a way of getting hold of those in the UK, they would be the answer 🙂
