Just seen a picture on Facebook that is doing the rounds of what looks like Whyte team riders posing by some bikes that are stickered up as S-140

Any ideas what they are ? test mules on new bikes coming out?

From the hosses mouth so to speak…

The original prototypes were built @ 140mm travel as that’s what Whyte thought the market demanded, but they tried a 150mm travel version and there was no downsides and the emergence of longer travel 29ers currently gave them the confidence to bring the longer travel version to market instead.

Whyte haven’t yet finalised the details themselves yet Renton. I’m expecting at least 2, possibly 3 different models though, in line with the G-160 I’d imagine.

    Can’t say for sure though.

Mboy, carbon only for the S-150?
Will we see carbon for the T129 for 2018?

Carbon for definite, ally a possibility I’m told.

    Doubtful

G160 is a big heavy lump, I’d expect a carbon option.

So had a little play on this this morning…

Nothing more than a quick car park test but it feels very very good indeed! Crucial numbers are all very similar to my Evil Wreckoning, but it feels a bit lighter and more direct.

Oh, that looks good 😀 !
Lots of space in the triangle to attach a small essentials bag.
What size is that frame? Good tyre clearance?

    Doesn’t it just!

Indeed. Space between top tube and seat mast is about ideal for a spare tube too!

What size is that frame? Good tyre clearance?

That’s a large. Reach is long, but not G-160 long if that makes sense, sizes up more like the T-130’s or T-129 I’d say. Which IMO is better as G-160’s are bonkers long!

Need to call you in a bit, hopefully have some good news for you mate…

More details mboy come on! That looks pretty much like a production model ready for shop floors? Coming soon?

Is that the right size for Renton then? He needs a new full-susser anyway

Silly narrow tyres on the rear like T-129 or can they fit proper sized 2.3?

I’m thinking of moving from a G150S to the current carbon T130 and pictures like these aren’t helping!

You could maybe ‘test’ a bmx in a car park but a 150mm travel 29er???

It’s the Works Carbon version, and I understand this will be the final spec. The 2 cheaper bikes as yet can’t be announced so I’m told but will feature new 2018 SRAM components more than likely.

So… 65.5 HA, 435mm stays, 330mm BB height, 1230mm wheelbase (in this large version). The full geometry sheet was up somewhere on the internet already (can’t find it right now) but the numbers I measured listed above.

Is that the right size for Renton then? He needs a new full-susser anyway

Yes, Renton sized, but this one very much not for sale as it’s a pre production prototype.

Silly narrow tyres on the rear like T-129 or can they fit proper sized 2.3?

That was sorted for 2017 anyway… But MUCH more clearance on this… Chainstays are 4mm longer at 435mm, main pivot has been moved forwards and up by maybe 15mm, putting it bang in line with an average 32-34T chainring for super efficient pedalling and leaving a lot more room for tyres. The 2.3″ Maxxis Aggressor on the back of this had plenty of room in there even on the 30mm internal rim.

More info as and when available…

Thanks for the info – hype seems to be building around the bike. Seen a few web articles, something in a mag too so must be close to ready.

It also makes Mr winkle feel dodgy but also my head as four weeks ago I walked away from the dealers with a yummy 160works.. This might have been a different story.. Expensive n+1

EWS Bike Check: Martyn Brookes’ Whyte S-150

    Interesting set-up details too.

Seems he chooses to use 11sp rather than Eagle for reliability.

Details look promising for this then.
Big monster truck type bike that will no doubt be good value.
I’d no doubt get one if I lived somewhere less flat.

Brooks set up is interesting.. 760mm bars even though he’s 185cm and riding Enduros (no bad thing, just an observation). Fork setup is 71 psi, 4 tokens and low speed compression open- this should allow the fork to ramp up nicely, but surely that doesn’t equal ‘firm and racy’ until half way through the travel/big hits?

Interestingly, I’ve just reverted to a 762mm bar – with similar grip overhang – as I needed a flat bar on my E29 and had one in the garage.

I don’t really notice the difference compared to my normal 785mm – probably ‘cos I now ride with my hands 1cm further out each side.

Try as I might, I can’t convince him to run his forks more linear with some LSC to prop them up against weight shift and dive. Although it is hard to sell him my setup when he is so much quicker than me…

Martyn also has some B+ 2.8 high rollers for his, so I know that they fit too. Size wise they feel similar to a T130, but the rear end has definitely evolved a step with the bigger bearings and linkage driven shock, it felt much stiffer laterally.
