    Under toptube pump fitting.

    Or for milking/suckling.

    And chain hangers (sorely missed)

Pump peg was my first thought, but there isn’t a matching one on the seat tube.

Besides I haven’t seen one of those old style pumps for years! I can’t imagine it’s a sought after feature on post 2000 bikes?

That sort of peg holds the pump against the seat tube, so only one peg needed. Not like the really old type that had two, and were a bit different.

Are you sure? That’d make the pump enormously long.

As long as the top tube. You bought the right sized pump for the frame. You young ‘uns 🙄 🙂

As paul4stones says. How old are you anyway?!!

Usually the battery would go flat and it would change from dim and barely usable to totally dim and unusable.

But sometimes they’d just disintegrate, leaving you with bits of plastic and metal scattered over the road, in the dark and the rain, with cars swooshing past spraying up fetid puddle-water to mingle with your tears.

Or they’d just be stolen at school.

Yep, as others have said it’s a pump peg for a really long pump.
How you getting on with my old bike?

Well I never. And I’m old enough that I should have known that!

I’ve got a similar nipple on my Kaffenback. It has a lovely Zefal HP-X pump attached to it which is really rather useful for fast pumping of tyres on winter nights.

Older Kaffs had a chain hanger on the stays, too. Not sure if the Pomp does.

Love it! Been using it off road with knobblies on for a while. Serviced it this weekend and put slicks on for some winter commuting duties, and while checking out the frame for ways to fit mudguards got to wondering what the nipple was for.

I wonder if on one do a matching retro pump?

Good old days when you chose a pump because it’d actually inflate a tyre, not because it’d fit conveniently in your pocket then take an hour to inflate a tyre to 20psi

Somthing that’s missing off modern bikes 🙁

Thankfully as headtubes have gotten shorter and tubes fatter they sit well enough between the HT and DT.

Kinesis Tripster ATR has a Chain hanger, on a Ti frame, lovely detail

I had an old tourer where the pump peg was also an grease injetion nipple, to keep your unsealed, non-cartridge bearing headset nice and clean.
