  • Why are gum walls/skin wall so good to look at?

    Is it a nostalgia thing?

Is it that they are just cool?

What is it that makes them so good?

Because they are a bit different. It was the same bitd with blackwalls, couldn’t get rid of the skin/gum/amberwalls quick enough.

Everyone of those bikes would look better with black walled tyres!

^ I love skin walls, no idea why, they just look right to me.

I think skin walls look terrible.

I used to own a Raleigh Mustang in pink just like that top photo, maybe 20 years ago!

    Don’t get it myself.

They look OK on retro bikes, but look appalling on modern ones (to me).

Personal thing, as with all things ascetic. Although they are very ‘cool’ at the moment. Bit meh for me, but fill your boots.

If you had a bike with them back in the day I can understand how you might get all misty-eyed over them but I can’t see it myself.

Was gonna say, there’s a thread full of them for the pervs.

I’m a fan, but hated them in the days of aluminium rims and brakes, first wet ride and your expensive Veloflexes were a grey mess for the rest of the 100km before they wore out.

I don’t think they look good at all, they make any bike look instantly old fashioned, which is fine on an old bike, not good on a modern bike.

I’ve got to disagree. I think the beige clashes with the black, they look horrid IMO.
White sidewalls however are a different matter, they look very desireable.

I love them on road bikes, particularly when mounted on some deep carbon rims.

But I don’t think they work as well on MTB’s.

They look lighter and faster, init. The pale colour sets off the round hoop of each wheel nicely. Like a pair of full stops at the end of the sentence that is the bike.

    They are horrid.
If he didn’t win so much i’m sure Scott would have banned Nino ruining the image of their bikes with them by now!

    Negative frequency-dependent selection.

Or in English, “strange but attractive”

If everyone had skinwalls, a beard and pink hair we’d think they were a bit dull.

    They are horrid.

I always assumed that was because he runs tubulars, which never really stopped being tan-walled so it helps his tyre sponsors get their product noticed if it’s easily recognizable, a bit like Orange rollers on MRP guides.

Tubulars don’t have to be skinwall – as you say, probably just so Mr Dugast gets his name in print every time Nino’s bike is photo’d.
However whether they are made by Mr Dugast, or by elves using the finest fairy dust, they still make that lovely Scott bicycle look ugly

I do remember them going out of fashion. The new all black looked so much better

I like them again now. But it is simply revolving door fashion
