    As above really.

I've just discovered a great trip hop duo called Mandalay – v. relaxing.

Pete Tong is the UK rep on the international music genre naming committee 😀
Garage started in s a US club called Paradise Garage in which different styles of music were played. From this mix a separate recognisable new 'sound', Garage, evolved. Pretty sure House has a similar etymology, it came from a club called The Warehouse in Chicago. Wikipedia will know exact details.

Garage was used to describe a particular style of punk/rock with bands like Husker Du decades before it was hijacked by the dance brigade, same with hardcore (again from a punk/thrash scene)

bloomin trendies can never do anything original 😉

there's a track called Garage Band by The Clash:

    "we're a garage band
    we come from garage land"

I think I was in a garage band once. We used to practice in the garage

I used to also be in a garage band and the guitarist listened to a lot of R&B.

..which meant (as John said) we practiced in a garage and the guitarist listened to a lot of Muddy Waters and BB King.
I was into hardcore myself. Which involved guitars and skateboards.

    No, he was a closet

John, the Clash track is Garageland I think.

Anyway, garage was first used to describe certain types of Psychedelic bands around 66 AFAIC. The term has been reused, much like R&B.
