Regular MTB shoes or my Hike-a-bike MT90s?

depends on your walking to pedalling ratio; if you want to be riding 100 miles a day then flaking out go for fully rigid MTB shoes, if you want to spend less time riding and a bit more time walking about then go for something semi rigid, specialized Taho's are superb for this as they are very comfy on and off the bike. Or you could always us whatever shoes you currently use and take a pair of light trainer/sandals in your panniers.

Tahos are nice – or Sonomas which look less "bikey", are my touring favourites. But that's for on-road stuff. They have no grip for hikey-bikey stylee.
