  • Which 29er Steely SS for tourer?

    As per title.

    I’m not interested in the gears debate. Click clonk click grind.

    I want a steely that is going to be a great mile muncher. I’m not ruling out EBB just jet but prefer horizontal or sliders out back

    Pipe dreams has an 853 with tapered headtube but seems more suited to trail. I could get rigid cromoto with reducer.

    NINER SIR not considered due to the ridiculous price.

    Please help.

    i had a Fortitude Adventure but didn’t get on with it at all as it was sooo long so I’ve sold it and am just about to order a new Roadrat for exactly what you intend to be doing.

    Has all the mounts for racks front and rear or Salsa Anything Cage front, three bottle mounts, comes in awesome green colour and it’s Reynolds 725…
    Oh, did I mention British Brand? 🙂

    Hmm. So is that a dyno hub on the front? What’s the steering like with that mega short stem? And you’ve gone for a more road type drop set up rather than an off road where you ride more in the drops?

    They gone up. Just sold a 26 ss inbred. Flawless at the price. I want dingle out back so sliders looking good.

    I can vouch for a Karate Monkey, very versatile, but for full on touring, the Ogre’s probably a better bet.

    p4s: I had to fit short stem with road drops to maintain the same reach. It rides quite well in this setup, I’m considering the dirt drops for summer though. Oh, and you’re right – I have a dynamo hub on the front.

    Really pleased with my el mariachi, but you need specialist racks which are expensive.

    The Ogre is the best bet or the roadrat as they could be loaded up pretty easily.

    A lot of frame will be ruled out by lack of rack mounts.

    I wont be using racks. Frame bag etc etc etc. You know the story. Ultralight. I’ll be having a dingle setup so I’m thinking sliders would make manual gear change way quicker and easier. Oppinions?

    Im thinking 853 skookum in 29er. Its got sliders out back with belt drive compatability.

    It has a tapered headtube but that dont matter as i’m buying from scratch anyway. Just need to figure a way to get some cromotos or singular forks on the cheap + a headset too.

    El Mariachi gets my vote 🙂 It’s a very versatile machine.

    Run two chainrings as well as two cogs and you won’t have to worry about adjusting the rear end. (as long as the difference is the same as the rear, ie 34/32 – 16-18)

    If your not worried about racks pretty much any 29er frame will do just try them and see what rides the best. Tapered headtubes aren’t an issue.

    Salsa elmariachi , salsa now do racks for their clever dropouts. The salsa fork takes anything racks too.

    But if no racks needed replace the surly with a karate monky.

    Do you mean leave enough slack so as to apply a transverse load to the chain in order to shift? If this is possible the EBB is deffinitely a contender and the singular swift could be an option. Failing that the skookum represents the best value 853 on the market at the moment from what i can see. And its dometic design.

    I’ve built my Ogre up with a Rohloff hub. Fly to Alaska in 5 weeks to start a year long trip to Argentina. 😀

    You’d have to drop the wheel out and swap over.

    two ratios

    32-18

    and

    34-16

    the total amount of teeth is 50. So you don’t need to adjust the dropouts. I ran it on an inbred when it was my only bike for a while. Worked a treat.

    I don’t have any photos of my old set up, but this bike has a similar idea.

    It would open up EBB and other complicated chain tension systems like salsa etc. Which can be hassle on the trail/road.

    I’m going to put it back on my salsa at some point.

    You can fit other racks to an El Mariachi so don’t rule it out on that front

    That black sheep 2 face would definitely get stolen as a touring bike.

    I have it as my facebook pic. It oozes the absolute best in 29er builds but its just too pricey. I’d rather drop a few K on super ultralight hiking equipment and if the bike gets stolen I can still complete my trip in hiking bliss.

    I totally forgot about dropping the wheel. Quick release on EBB then would have to be one hell of a durable and quick method to change gears.

    My only problem now is whether to go with a phil hub and eno dos or just stick to hope SS allowing the option for a few gears down the road.

    It has to be a crest and i think i’ll start out tubeless and take some tubes and folders. Start out tyre would be supermoto 2.4 or something. High volume semi slick.
